Headlight bucket swap
« on: February 15, 2024, 08:09:36 AM »
My 75 CB550 has a chrome headlight bucket. I ordered a black one to finish my build. How hard is it to replace the bucket? What needs to be done exactly to remove the old headlight bucket and install the new one? Thanks

Headlight lamp out, front turn signal lights have to be disconnected in bucket, then come off.  There are a couple of bolts that hold the headlight bucket to the fork ears that have to come off.

Bucket is then worked out with all the wire connections staying in tact.  Start with the smallest wire looms, from the tach/speedo, then the lamp display, then the big harness.

Hardest part of the job is to get all the wire harness/connections out without disconnecting things.

Dont forget the steel sleeves in the mounting holes and the nuts with ground wires on the inside or things wont work properly

Biggest problem I've encountered is getting the rat's nest of wires to compress enough to get the headlamp assembly mounted back on without digging it into the rat's nest. Also, very likely one or more of the connectors will become disconnected, and despite color coding, you'll have one heckuva party trying to figure out where it came from.
It's easier to ask forgiveness than to gain permission.
