Fork Cover - Rubber Bottom Cushions

Installing the new steering stem, bearings, and rebuilt forks on my K1 750 project.  This will include installing the first of the new painted body parts I received from Yamiya.  I feel like I should be wearing soft cotton gloves!

Anyway, I'm wondering about the proper direction to install the lower fork cover cushions?  The tapered side of my original (?) rubber cushions were installed up into the bottom of the fork cover with the flat side of the cushion in contact with the top of the lower triple tree.  Is this correct?

Or is the flat side of the rubber cushion supposed to go up into the bottom of the fork cover, against the small flange, with the tapered side facing down on to the top of the lower triple tree?

I have always fitted them taper up

That's the way way my old ones came out Bryan, but as I put it all back together, I'm thinking...

The flat side fits nicely against the recessed flange in the bottom of the fork cover and I've never seen a tapered rubber surface but up into the ID edge of a flat circumferential flange.  I don't see Honda designing it this way.  And with the tapered side down, and with the fork tube inside of the rubber "doughnut", the small flat at the end of the taper side of the cushion, nicely contacts the top of the triple tree tightly around the tube.

It's hard to tell from the parts book diagram I have but, if anything, it looks like the PM shows the taper side down.  So I'm still scratching my head on this.

Flat side down. I think that ensures that any water that gets in there will drain out. The other way might create too tight a seal?

Any originals I’ve pulled were installed that way too.

Thanks John!  Thanks Bryan!  That's 2 for 2, (3 for 3 if you count the ones I took out), and good enough for me!
I'll go with the flat side down.
