My paint melted...original paint sourcing?
« on: August 27, 2024, 09:27:10 AM »
I finally got my tank cleaned out and de-rusted (and I removed a failed POR-15 liner). Got the petcock setup, put some fuel in the tank, and a bit splashed on the paint — it instantly melted into a goop. I guess the last guy painted the tank with paint that is fuel soluble, good move buddy.

After being pissed for a couple hours, I decided it’s an opportunity for me to make the paint color original again (was just solid black instead of the glory blue black of the 74 CB350F).

2 related questions:

1. Do you know where i can get good quality automotive paint that could match the original "Glory Blue Black", which does have metallic flake in it. I do have a sample of the original.

2. How do you get the badges of the tank and the side covers. Mine are in pretty good shape and I would hate to damage them.

If you are planning to paint it yourself with rattle cans, give auto66 a look.

They use good nozzles on their spray cans.

I used their paints for my 550.

Repaintsupply.com uses the Spray max can and can put any color in the spray max can with the good spray max nozzle.

No idea, but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't, you could check their website.

Go to a DuPont automotive paint distributor. Have them mix your color in the ImRon paint system.
Once in the rattle can follow the directions, once activated it will set up, just like concrete..
It will cure (dry) and is impervious to most gasoline and oil mistakes and oops..

You'll need all the necessary PSE or it will catalyze your lungs too… A mask with a positive air supply works best imo..
ImRon is still used on just about every Class8 truck, plane, boat, LP tank produced of any size that’s never garaged..
