We Don't Realize How Good We Have It.........
« on: October 15, 2024, 08:09:39 AM »
I am referring to spinning wrenches on old motorcycles.......I have a 2005 Triumph Rocket 3 that I bought new that has about 30k on the clock currently.  Sadly like most of my small herd it sits more than it is ridden.  I pulled it out a couple of days ago just to exercise it some on a short ride.  Cranked for ever and no start.  I know with an 05 the technology by todays standard is antiquated but it is still way beyond my limits of understanding.  With an old one you check for fire, gas, and compression, so I put on my cave man face and went to work.  After pulling the tank to access the dual plugs on each cylinder, (I had filled the bike up on the last outing and the tank holds enough gas to supply the entire State of Rhode Island for at least a week) I found there was spark when cranking. One culprit eliminated, which was satisfying since there are a tons of relays and safety by pass switches that have invaluable functions of which I have no idea as to what they are.  Upon checking the throttle bodies, they looked dry.  A little carb cleaner in each barrel, the bike fired immediately,  damnit, "FUEL PUMP' which is located internally in the cavernous gas tank. After filling up every small gas can I had and most of the riding mowers in my neighborhood, the tank was drained and I got the unit out. BTW incase any of you are wondering, getting a mouth full of gas from a siphoning hose is still just as pleasant as ever.  After talking to a couple of Buddies on the R3 Site who had been there and done that, and of course visiting You Tube, parts are on order and I should be able to bring the "Old Fat Bottom Girl" back to life in a week or so.  I went with an aftermarket fuel pump since Triumph charges $57 for the gas filter alone.  The next old 750k I get started after sitting for years is going to be a piece of cake..........

Well written, it made me laugh.

Good luck with the fix.

How many gallons is that tank?
The 94' Concours 1000 has a 7.5 gallon tank. Once I tried to take it off before draining, I'll never try that again. ::)

Looking at the shape of the tank I wonder if they’ll suffer the same problem as the Yamaha XJ900 and rot on the 2 small sections hanging down.

You checked to see if the filter is blocked btw?

ha ha yeah was working on a buddies Thruxton 900 of similar vintage that has a sick fuel injector.  Can you get it out without pulling the rack?  nope both throttle bodies cleverly made to look just like carburetors have to come off and we still have not figured out how to get to that clogged injector.  We had to watch a YouTube video to get the tank off lol
If it works good, it looks good...

All so true and I agree! I love my 2008 Honda Varadero XL1000, but on the rare occasion (once) I’ve worked on it; same story. Just changing spark plugs and air filter took a full afternoon and looking around in there left me shaking my head. Too much stuff…..

Lately the fuel injection pump does not come on instantly when the key is switched. The owners manual clearly states not to hit START until the pump cycles. So far, the simple solution is to key OFF and back ON…… when that stops working, the games will begin!

Does the new gas with ethanol have a more refreshing flavor than the old stuff?
I haven't tried the new stuff.
Yet.

Doesn’t smell as good as the old “real” gas and has a much longer aftertaste!

New pump installed today, the "Old Girl" is back to being her contrary self.  I bought it new in 2005 and have made the promise I am keeping it long enough to register it with antique tags.....six more years..... It still makes me smile every time I twist the throttle....
