Picked up this Twin Star 185 yesterday. 10,000 klms on it has been stored indoors forever.
I think all it needs is a set of points, some new gas, spark plugs and maybe a set of coils.

* Will the coils from a CL350 work with this twin you think? I have a few sets lying around is why I ask.

Should be a good bike to offer visitors who want to explore the Island, and in 3 more years my daughter can use it.
You will see the photo below where she has taken a fancy to it, along with a few friends she ran into on the ferry home.

I have informed her that she needs to read the entire Clymer manual and help get it running before she can concider it as hers

Careful you don't find yourself scooting around on it.

As long as it is 12V and points ignition -no electronic ignition-, the coils of the CL350 will do. But it's rare that the coils would ever fail.

I think the 'entire Clymer manual' is a little harsh for a kid her age! She's in school, eh? Unless, of course, it's an open book exam at the end.

But I would definately have her learn to change her own oil and plugs, do the weekly checks and cleanups, and take the MSF class if there's one nearby.

Nice move, Derek. You'll have the whole family riding together pretty soon.

No movement in throttle. I have a manual and it states all I had to do to remove carb was to turn Top cap and slide Jet needle up and disconnect cable.
Great if it wasn't stuck.....or am I missing something. Looks as though the trottle slider is stuck?

I have lube spayed it and it still won't budge?

A little heat from a hair dryer? Any way to boil it in carb cleaner? Other then that I have no ideas.

boil it in oil....or soak it in kerosene for a week...don't try and force it upwards....then give the bore a very light polish, along with the slide..

My 13yr old daughter has been doing a lot of work on the bike recently. Lots of parts removal and cleaning with tooth brushes and Varsol, sand paper etc. I'm very proud she has taken an interest and is spending the time working on getting it cleaned up and painted.

Hi Webby, just a thought regarding the coil replacment you mentioned.

I am not 100% sure but I would take a guess and say the 2 bikes have diferent cranks.

The 350 has a 180 and most of the small one have 360 cranks.

If this is the case the ignition on the small 185 will be like half of what we have on the fours.

It will have one coil firing both cylinders at the same time, one being a waisted spark when the other cylinder is exhausting.

I think you will find the 350 has two coils and two sets of points.

It was not necessary to get into it as the bike started after cleaning the carbs.
On another note though, I ran the bike around the Island with a 12 volt bat. Seems the bike is a 6 volt

The dealer mechanic when handing me a new 6volt batt seemed surprised I hadn't burnt out the system with the 12 volt ride.
Probably why the turn sigs wouldn't work

Good for getting your daughter into your hobby. I am a mechanic by trade and when my daughter was young(14-15),she would hang around and help me with auto work. She's the youngest of 3 kids and showed more interest than my boys at that age. Of course the boys grew into men and discovered what it cost to have your car worked on at the shop!!! All 3 of my kids are proficient at basic repairs now. Totally good bonding when the kids get involved.

Really cool that they are doing that. You should be proud, just as seaweb and anyone else whose kid(s) have picked up mechanicing skills, should be.

It's a bit like painting a hallway, the room at the end looks like crap so you might as well do the whole house

I've done a bit of painting and Mariah has been busy pollishing all the rust off the chrome bits.

Picked up the rear wheel with the new tire today and we got that installed along with the brakes stays etc.
I'm very happy with it. Almost looks new!

Problem: I removed the ignition due to an irregular on/off and found the PO had taped up a broken switch.
I need a new one. Photos below....any on have one?
