Man, those old planes and such has some pretty cool old engines. 8) I know that Lincoln, Cadillac and Allison had V-12s. Were there any others?

Did read years ago in a chopper rag someone who took the front two cyls  from a allison and put them in a bike.

       Thanks Terry,

I didn't know about Ferrari v12s back that far, although I did know about the Jaguar V12s. I haven't heard about a V8 from 2 Indian 4s, but I did see a picture once with a chopper with an Indian Four that had 2 more cylinders grafted on to make it a 6cyl job. I am wondering about any other V12 engines used in military vehicles of any kind. Thanks again for the info Terry.

Maybe one of our members across the pond can verify this, but I believe the British Centurion tank was powered by a 650 HP V12 Rolls Royce engine.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

There you go Bob, I had forgotten about the Rolls Royce V12 engines. But, I don't know the specific info you are asking about. I'm curious to hear that info myself.

Bill440cars, The U.S. Navy used Packard V-12's in the WWII PT boats.

I'll bet most of us remember the TV series: "McHale's Navy" and the crew of the PT-73 ... ;D

There was a cast iron version of the Merlin known as the Meteor.

As for the packards...they were built under license from Allison.

I used to fly behind a Pratt and Whitney R-1830 that had a bow tie cast in the rear blower cover.

There was also a "Meteroite" engine used in the Antar tank transporter reputedly (I never yet seen one) 2/3 of a Merlin with no blower and 2 gallons to the mile when loaded

Sorry to resurrect this oldie, but ran across this little tidbit about the old Packard Plant in Detroit (about to be demolished) and engines supplied to the British in WWII. I had never read about how it might have cost Packard, in the long run, as a auto maker.

That's really a shame about the old Packard plant, but the time to save it was many years ago. I'm afraid it's past that point now. They even auctioned off the facade of the 1907 main entrance some time ago. Back in the mid '90's I went through Detroit on my way to the Meadowbrook Concours, at the time they were tearing down the old Cadillac plant on Clark St. It's sad to see a once great city, slip so deep into decay.

Bill I think we had an Alvis crash truck that had 6 wheels and I think it had part of a Rolls (maybe a Merlin modified ) in it we used to watch the crash crews playing with out beside the tarmac in rough ground' it was as fast frontwards as backwards.

Just to add a bit the Rolls Meteor wasnt cast iron it had cast instead of forged pistons, no blower(Merlin got ALL the goodies) and was well downrated for ground work.

If you can get Top Gear there was a program where Clarkson drove a greman built spitting beastie with an aero engine in it plus a beutiful Bently built by "Devon Bob" that looke like an old "Blower Bently" but had a Meteor engine in it---Sounded amazing. I think i coppied to a dvd if any of you are sad enough to want a copy! Here is a link to a Telegraph article on the said car:-
