You can use any kind of Automatic Transmission Fluid you want, I suppose. The acetone thins the fluid viscosity for penetration into tiny crevices, I expect.

Hydroscopic means that it absorbs water. I guess that it can pull moisture out of the rusty surfaces... Meanwhile, you answered my question, I didn't realize that ATF was transmission fluid. Pretty cool.

To store acetone & other solvents, generally polyethylene squeeze bottles do a great job. In chemistry we get expensive 'nalgene' bottles, but I think they're mostly just very clean & pure polyethylene. See wikipedia for more info... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nalgene

Seriously, like $10 for a single rubber carb boot?? When I read things like that it just discourages me to own a CB. I couldn't give a rat's ass about OEM sandcast BS. They should put that on the Rich Guy's Forum. I mean if you're gonna blow that kinda money on a piece of rubber, why bother coming to this forum. On a positive note, thanks for putting up a cheap alternative and other homemade stuff.

This and Slickdeals.net are my favorite forums.

I use the nalgene bottles at work. I can tell you from experience, the acetone and MEK will eat the guts of those plastic spray bottles making them bottles that don't spray.

I didn't know those Sure Shots were so pricey but I think with something like that,you're better off paying the extra $ than buying at Harbor Freight to save some bucks. Harbor Freight has cheap sh!t stuff that some of it is OK but other stuff.....nix!!!! I buy air fittings,brushes,other misc.things. Even bought a kit that compresses pistons on automotive brake calipers that have the e-brake incorporated in ($20) but I wouldn't buy power tools there or gear pullers. Also bought impact sockets there (Pittsburg brand) cheap and haven't broke any yet. Go buy a set of impact sockets from the Snap-on truck and the thing that will be broke is you!!!!

Squirt it into the bleeder hole, too. It's not just the threads that corrode tight, the bleeder seat does, too! The bleeder hole gets penetrating oil to the seat as well as the deep side of the threads.

ATF and Acetone does work good. ATF, Acetone, Mineral Sprits and kerosene in equal parts works even better. It was designed as a solvent at Frankford Arsenal for government firearms. Its called "Ed's Red". Fellow shooters here will know of it. Its cheap, dissolves carbon and penetrates very well.

Interesting article....I used wd-40 exclusively for years.....I'll have to try the ATF concoction. Ive been using this other stuff for the last couple of years, and it makes the old wd40, and liquid wrench look like muddy water....anyone else ever use it??

One of the little screw on reflectors on my K0 headlight ears is rusted in good, so my alternatives are to drill through the reflector so i can drill through the head of the screw, thus destroying the reflector, or try TT's concoction, I'll do that now and report back! Cheers, Terry.

I work part time restoring 60 year old airplanes and I have been able to put the ATF/Acteone to the test. I have discovered that a 50/50 mix (as tested) works the best, I say that because the acetone will evaporate out if left open, and the mixture will settle out so you have to shake the mixture before applying. If you can soak the area well before attempting removal of the troublesome part, it works best. I would soak things several times an let it sit overnight if possible. I have made believers out of devout Kroil users, which was not easy to do. I have separated parts from each other that I would have previously tossed.

I'm using PB Blaster and it's the shizzle for the gnizzle. I had never seen or heard of it before until I went to an engineering supply shop and I immediatly thought that it would come in handy. I use it all the time now.

Thanks Ed, I can get at if from behind (the headlight ears are off the bike) so I'm hoping it won't bugger the reflector, but I can still buy K0 reflectors from Yamiya, so no biggie if I do. It's soaking now. Cheers, Terry.

The acetone will evaporate out, I would be more concerned with the slippery ATF in my engine oil.
