cb400f - which dyna electronic ignition can I use?

I did a search and found a lot of people who have said they like their dyna ignition systems for but I cannot find a consensus for all the parts that I will need specific to the cb400f.

Do I just need the Dyna S DS1-1?  This appears to have been available for 20 years as shown on the dyna website.

Someone posted these instructions for the Dyna S.  The instructions say you can use the stock coil, but I have also seen a lot of people mention replacing the coils and getting good perfmance/results.

I saw someone mention they had a cb400f that came with a Dyna III.  They seem to be discontinued for the cb bikes.  But which model number was correct for the cb400f (if they ever made one).  Apparently http://www.m3racing.com/graphics/dyna3_lg.jpg sells one for the cb750, but I do not know if it will work for the cb400f as well.

Then there is the Dyna 2000 which allows you to program different timing curves.  They list one for;
1979-1983 Honda CB 750, 900, 1100
Has anyone tried to get one of these working on a sohc model?  If so, I am sure it is someone who did it for a 750.  So would that work on the cb400f as well?

Is the Dyna 2000 an open loop system (no feedback, ie like Power Commander signal modifier)?  It sounds like it is.  How 1980.

Can you program a startup sequence for the first 30 seconds?  Or do you have to pick one curve that is not time dependant?

What do you have to do to make the Dyna 2000 physically fit onto the engine.

The 2000 is a digital unit. The new 2000's allow programable advance curves (though Dynatek doesn't have the software/patch cable yet ::)). I just sent a progamble CB750 unit to TTR in South Africa to be used for his racing 400. I sent 5 or 6 pics showing measurements on the digital caliper. I don't know if he has hooked it up yet but he said it would work based on the measurements. Even regular 2000's have 5 different advance curves. When you start the bike it throws 20 degrees of retard into the engine which works very well with high compression engines. As for the close loop systems....what carbureted bike have you seen that uses O2 sensors that modify the ignition curve or fuel curve? The most I've seen are TPS systems and cam position sensors. Close loop is fuel injected like BMW, Ducati's etc. I'm not a big fan of close loop for bikes as it is difficult to compensate for performance enhancemnts easily and or cheaply (ala Power Commander). Luftmeister made 60 or 70 chips for BMW's ...you would be lucky to have any work perfectly. Using A/F on a load dyno allows individual tuning. No 2 bikes are alike even if the exact same parts are put into them.

Thanks to MRieck, I have fitted the 2000 to my 400F racer with no problems, I have yet to fire it up as I am waiting for some new suppresion plug leads to arrive. I will update with some pics later.

The DS1-1 works fine with stock coils. The Dyna coils are probably a bit more efficient, but if you can't fork out the $300 for the ignition coils and wires at the moment... you can run the Dyna S just fine with stock coils. In fact, I just rode 20 miles to work on a 400 with a DS1-1 and stock coils, the bike has over 1000 miles on it since the Dyna was installed.

Yes, it works for sure, I tested mine this morning on the way to work and will be testing it again in a couple of hours on the way home, in fact I have been "testing" it for about 1000 miles now. The installation is REALLY simple. In fact you can view the installation instructions on Dynatek's site. Probably the most difficult thing to do is time it (really simple, easier than points) or getting yourself to use the "vampire" tap to tap your power for the unit.

Yes, Z1 has them, listed under the 400f section even. They are probably the cheapest you will find them anywhere, save ebay, at $120 + shipping. Plus they are a great company to deal with.

Vampire taps are those stupid clamp on splices have one side that contains your bikes power wire and another that is only halfway through that is for the power supply to the dyna. I don't like those things because they actually cut the existing wire in order to make the splice. But, my soldering iron was broken at the time so... I still need to go back and re-make that splice with a soldering iron.

We've had the programming kit in stock for 6 months now...  with the CurveMarker software, you can program the advance / retard curce and set the rev-limit very precisely.  Unfortunately, the Dyna-S 2000 isn't available for the 400/4 - although in most cases the Dyna-S is all you need anyway.  The Dyna 2000 is overkill for most bikes.  I run a 2000 on a turbo'd bike - but that's where the retard curves and rev-limiter come into play.

Only a small mod to do. the pin on the back of the advancer unit is a tad larger. easy fix.
All else is a bolt on affair.

I'm considering removing the dyna from my 400F that the previous owner put in.
The original coils are there but it won't seem to run right. Doesn't seem like its getting full power.

Any thoughts on this?
