I'm looking at new sprockets & chain. I know the stock sprockets are 17T front & 37T rear (2.18 GR), with a 100-link 530 non-O-ring chain. I think that chain must be bought in even number links (alternating link pattern). I think if you change one tooth size, just reposition the axle. If you change a number of teeth size gain/lose 1/2 link per tooth. So 3 tooth change is 1-1/2 link change. Sooooooooooo:
If I go with 18T front & 37T rear (2.06 GR), I can still use the 100-link chain? (=lower RPM: better cruising/gpm & worse pickup)
If I go with 17T front & 34T rear (2.00 GR), then I have to lose 2 links, so I get a 98-link chain? (=same thing, slightly more pronounced)
And while the o-ring is a no-no on 550's, the options are standard (20.45 mm pin length) or heavy duty (22 mm pin length). My trusty calipers tell me that the chain I'm currently running has a 22 mm pin, so I'm inclined to go with the HD chain.
Any recommendations as to which way is preferrable: 18/37 or 17/34? I'm thinking the 18/37 because the chain remains the same at 100 links. Thoughts?
Thanks
