Last year I acquired my father's 77 cb750.  He bought it is 84 and I remember him bringing it home in buckets.  He modified and rebuild it several times until 4 years ago when he lost interest.  That's where I come in.  I convinced him to give it to me and i proceeded to make it my own.  Right now I am in the "put back together stage".  Here are a few pics of my progress:

It still has electric start, this is a back up.  I used it a few times last summer, it's not the easist thing to use but it can be done.  I actually stand on the ground facing the rear of the bike and kick it over with my right leg.

What's the santee box for? I've heard of them but never seen where they go.

It is only slightly smaller than the last tank I had on it (see pic in my avatar). The Santee box hold all the electrics, reg and rec, solenoid, starter switch and button.

OH yeah, the box mounts on top of the motor, kinda on top of the starter plate off to the right.

Update from tonight. front end on minus wheel and brakes, swingarm on, carbs on.



Anyone else running a Santee elec box (or similiar) having clearance issues with the carb drain sticking into the box? Picture should explain it better.

A little more progress.  Wheels are on, new throttle tube, cables, new clutch cable.

Awhile back I bought a well-used '70s-era CB750 chopper just for the motor. It had a (real) Santee box on it and while the carbs came close, they didn't actually touch. Had about 1/4" of clearance between the top of the box and the bottom of the carbs IIRC.

I figured that my homemade box was slightly off in the height.  After a little work I made it fit.

I had one on last year and it was not to difficult.  Kind of basic but it works.  Some flat bar steel bolted to each front mount on the tank and then bolted to the frame.  I will try and snap a pic tonight and post for you.

As for the shocks, they are stock.  Swingarm was stretched.

Ya - i ask becasue I have an extended swingarm similar to yours and would have to go back to stock shocks (have 11'' short shocks now) if I plan to put it on my bike.

here is how the old sportster knockoff tank was mounted at the front.  the new sportster tank I got will mount pretty much the same way, it will need longer bars though.

I will try and get some pics up tomorrow.  other that figuring out a new seat it is essentially done.  Back to the question about the sportster tank fiting over the backbone....well yes and no.  It fits over but the petcock hits the outside right downtube.  I ended up with the tank sitting a little higher than initially thought but I am still quite happy with it.
Since adding my homemade Santee electrical box I am limited to what I can run for an air intake.  I have a breadbox style but it hits on the bar that holds all 4 carbs together.  I could run pods i guess.  Any jetting suggestions for either of these scenarios?  I am running a 4-2 exhaust with "just for show" mufflers.

I think I may make a longer narrower seat.  the one on it is a little wider than I like.  Still up and the air about running a front fender.

sam,thanks for the update on the tank,i fitted my sportster tank onto my spare frame and the bottom of the tank lays on top of the triangular bracket that connects to the frame backbone,do you have the same issue.thanks

Here it is in better light.  I got lazy and have not finished the seat yet. I've put a little over 1000kms on it since putting it on the road May 22nd.
