cb450 clutch problem
« on: April 24, 2007, 03:28:33 AM »
I am working on a problem where my clutch will not disengage the engine. This bike has less than 14K mile on it put on all new cables, This bike was sitting for many years but came up nicely.
It looks as though I am have the clutch cable adjusted correctly.
Any Help?

Hi Cadler
Sounds like the clutch plates are rusted together. Best fix is to take the clutch apart and clean the plates up. If you can ride the bike with out using the clutch. Ride the bike with the clutch lever pulled in and the clutch may break free.

I can shift through the gears without the clutch sitting up on the kickstand.

That's normal. Without the motor running, you should be able to click through the gears without the clucth disengaged.

I know I can click through the gears without the engine running. The problem is that the transmission will not disengage when I pull in the clutch. I have the cables adjusted properly.

What about the Clutch itself? Have you adjusted the Clutch? The first step would be to back off the cable adjustments, adjust the clutch, make the lower adjustment on the cable and then the adjustment at the lever. Have you tried that? Just going through the steps to see if you might have accidentally missed anything. ;) If the adjustment isn't the problem and the plates are stuck, I'd put the bike on the centerstand, get it started (when you can) and run it on the centerstand, with the clutch lever pulled in, to see if it might break loose. I really wouldn't suggest trying to ride it and try to break it loose that way. :-\  Keep us posted as to what you come up with, okay? ??? You may end up going into it, but maybe not.
                                                      Later on, Bill :) ;)

I will have to check the clutch adjustment in the book. I did not realize I had to do that.
I figured a bike with only 14K, it should be ok, but then again i do not know any history of this bike.
I basically took this bike apart, cleaned it painted it,checked valves and static point adjustment.

I adjucted the clutch and had to adjust it all the way clockwise to get the engine to disengage somewhat, there is still a little drag.
What would that mean, The clutch needs to be replaced or that it is new? not sure, any help
