Who runs a 520 chain on a CB750?
« on: April 30, 2007, 07:06:51 PM »
Sorry if this is a moot point.

Chains are so strong these days!  Does anyone run 520 chains on CB750 bikes?  Does anyone RACE with them? I think I have been trail riding on my dirt bikes too long....I've got 520 chain fever!

Thanks!

I replaced my chain with 520 3 years ago, no problems plenty strong for the cb.

Don't race, but tend to get carried away

running a 520 in my CB500 racer with ally rear sprockets / steel front sprocket

no problems so far but bike sees only track time

Would go with steel rear sprockets if aplying to a street bike.

You'll have to drill your own blank sprockets to suit your wheel and grind the front sprocket to suit the narrow 520,  that's what I had to do in mine. And pay attention to offsets so chain runs straight

With all the work needed and shorter chain life, got to wonder about the worth of 3-4 lbs weight savings on a street bike.

my two cents

I think I discovered, while restoring my 82 Yamaha IT465, that the front sprocket for this bike (same as a KDX200 as well) fits right onto the CB750 output shaft (though doesn't have any tapped holes for the retainer.

Ill double check on that today.  I'm willing to bet there are other dirtbike rear sprockets that would be a match...I'll do some research!

Bump for anyones updates.

I'm looking to convert the 630 to 520 on my 78k cb750.  Anything to watch out for or is it just swap out for new sprockets?  I read that I might need a spacer in a 630-530 conversion, so I assume the same might apply hear.

I wonder if the Cyclexchange set will work on a CB550 too?  Looks like it will fit.  Maybe need a smaller sprocket for the back wheel.

Kamal and Tinyrobot,

I run a 530, not 520 on both my 750's. It is a straight swap, just your new chain will have a few extra links in it, compared to a 630. The links are smaller in length and width, so you need more to span the distance between sprockets. I don't have either one here now to look at, but memory says 17/48 on the sprockets.

The 520 will work out very well. These people can make any size sprocket you want  www.sprocketspecialists.com

No luck here. I've seen them recommended several times and traded emails with Dee Dee in their sales department. She recommended a steel front and aluminum rear, with an o-ring chain for my 550. I let her know about the 550's o-ring incompatibility and that their catalogs 12-16 tooth front sprocket listings wouldn't support the stock gearing for the 550, which is 17 teeth up front, and inquired about having a 17 tooth front made or added to the catalog. At that point she started ignoring my emails. I tried two more times with no response. I was eager to buy them too...  ???

Dragging this thread back up.... ;D

I was thinking of going with a 530 set up, the local guy I get most of my NOS parts is trying to talk me into staying with the 630 set up.
His reason, he says the 530 will end up busting the engine case, and to small for what I have done to the engine....?
Didn't the 76 back 750's come with a 530 setup?
Mine is a K7 model, I have bored it over, larger cam, springs, 4 2 1 headed, ported head. I just don't see the need in the big bulky 630 chain?
What are the advantages disadvantages to this?

I think your local guy is stuck in the 70's.  Any decent, modern 530 chain is plenty strong enough.

+ 100000

New chains don't even resemble 70's chewing gum chains..... ;)   630's rob horsepower and are a big chain, not needed any more. Modern race bikes use 520 and 530 chains....Far more power than our little beasts.....

So, a 530 will work to replace a 630 (750-K8 ) chain without any mods. except the 530 will have more links ??

I'm having trouble finding a source for sprockets.. ???
Wheres a good place to get 530 sprockets that will work on my K7, I'm not wanting to stay with the stock gearing 15 41, thinking of going with a 14 46 for more low end.
