Topic: gas streaming out of left carb overflow line

i don't know what the proper term is for the hose that comes out of the bottom of the carb and goes down to drain below the engine, but gas is coming out of it pretty quickly. I just rebuilt the petcock and then this became an issue after i finished and went for a test ride. when the petcock is in the off position this doesn't happen and the right carb isn't doing it. i haven't taken the float bowl off yet as i'm not sure what i should be looking for. what is the deal with this tube anyway?

It's the float bowl overflow and is overflowing because the float valve is stuck.

Try giving it a couple of raps with a rubber hammer (or a piece of wood) to free up any bits in there and then drain the bowl using the drain screw.  It doesn't take very much to stop the valve from closing properly.

If all else fails, I'm afraid it's a cart strip.

Sorry about the cart strip thing. Fingers bigger than keys...

We try to keep the tech boards straight by moving stuff around. It's not a criticism, just our job.

Hope you got the carbs sorted, it's a real PITA when they piss fuel all over the ground.

Doesn't seem overly strict to me.  This is the sohc4 forum, after all.  I think the fact that there is even a section for "Other Bikes" is going above and beyond what should be expected from a group that is specific to a certain type of bike, don't you?

well i don't know
these bikes share so many of the same parts and technologies that it seems a bit silly to push me out because i have two less cylinders than the next guy, but other than that were are riding the exact same bike. especially with as general a question as the one i posed. if i had had four carbs instead of two the answer would have been exactly the same
but if you know a better board for older honda's, specifically twins, by all means point me in that direction

Allow me to take a step back here.  I'm not trying to be antagonistic at all.  In fact, I welcome you to this forum.  I have two bikes that don't fit the sohc4 criteria, so I'm definitely not an sohc4 snob (although they are some of the best bikes ever made ). 

It just seemed like you were somewhat unappreciative of the fact that you are able to receive help on a forum that specializes in a different style of bike than what you're working on.  Having a post moved to a more proper section of the forums is not an insult, nor should it be considered belittling in any way.  It's just an effort to keep things more organized and easier to use for people looking for help. 

And as for your comment about a better board for old Hondas, specifically twins?  There may be some out there, but I don't know of them.  I encourage you to stay here and make use of the vast amount of knowledge and experience available, much of which does apply to many different types of motorcycles.  But as with any tool, you'll get the best results if you use it as it was designed to be used.

I've looked around the 'net quite a lot for a forum dedicated to the Honda twins. While I've found a few, non is as mature and helpful as "other bikes" right here at SOHC4. I happen to have a twin and a four, so this is a good home. 

My other motorcycle home on the net is ADVrider.com. Not so many classic bikes over there (mostly newer dual-sports), but there are really inspiring tour reports, and lots of local riders to meet, no matter where in the world you live.

Since I am the weenie that moved the original thread to "other bikes" let me also assure you the move had no negative connotations at all, strictly a matter of forum organization. If the discussion has anything to do with a bike that is not a four, it goes in "other bikes." We try to minimally organize things to facilitate searches.

Back on subject... I had the same leak. turned out to be the tube was cracked.

Strange as it may seem, I've seen that problem reported on this site before.

I guess it's one to add to the "have you tried...?" file.
