Yeah they work very well. Problems like that arise from poor skills. You cant even blame poor parts cause it takes skill to identify the bad parts.

the factory leaned the hell outta these bikes back in the day to pass emmison's i live at sea level, and a completeley stock bike runs so lean here your lucky #1 if you can get it to start and #2, i have yet to have one that i can ever take the choke off completley unless its a 80 degree day or so. but i have spent alot of tme trial and error with these things to make them work in stock form they pretty much suck.

If you are having these problems then something isn't right. My completely stock carbs have no problem starting up here at sea level and the choke is only needed until it's warmed up. These carbs get a bad rap from some people but they work perfectly fine when properly cleaned and adjusted.

I would suggest that you check the carb boots ro leaks. Start the motor Some spray some carb cleaner around each rubber. If she changes how she runs, you know you have a leak. Also fiddle with the mixture srcews a bit to see if you can get off the choke. I am running 120 mains and I still need to use the choke to start and ease off of it for the first mile or two.

My K8 has 4in1 Kirker running 115 jets. I had a lot of cam chain noise until I synced the carbs. It idles about 1250 very smoothly but has to be choked below 50 degrees.
