750 tank on 550?
« on: May 15, 2007, 04:30:36 PM »
May be a stupid question but I'll ask anyway.  Would a 750 tank fit on a 550?  Anyone know the difference in lengths?

It depends on what you mean by "fit", and it also depends on what years and models of the 750 and 550 you're asking about.

I have a 78 750 tank that I fit on my 76 550K.  I thought it would be harder but really it was quite simple.  You need to cut a small portion of the mounting studs off and trim the rubber bushings.  The rear rubber strap didn't mate up so I used a piece of foam for the rear tab to rest on and used a heavy zip tie to secure it.  I also have a 750K tank that I was going to use, it fit but I didn't like the look.  If you fit a 750 tank make sure that the petcock is on the same side as your 550.

Ok thanks. I was also wondering if a 750 tank is longer.  I was thinking it may be a quick "stretched" tank for a 550.

it is a "stretched tank" for the 550. to put a 750f tank on my 500K1, I had to shorten the posts on the frame as had been mentioned, and then cue my stock seat pan about 2" in the front to allow for the longer tank. I came up with a mounting system for the rear of the tank to keep it secure. there is a pic of my cafe project in a recent link titled body pics. that post has a pic of the longer tank on my bike.

Hey hymodyne... are you saying this is a 550 with a 750 tank.  If so... that's really sweet!

I cut the seat pan on my 500K1 and took a thin rubber hose cut lengthways and ran it around the new cut edge. I'll post some pics of my rear tank mount mods this afternoon.
