Outer clutch install help please
« on: May 18, 2007, 05:08:57 PM »
Hi gang!
Any tips for installing the outer clutch basket? I can get it to within about a 1/4 to 1/8'th inch from home. The gear on the rear of the basket hasn't engaged the one on the kick starter yet. I have been tapping at it with the end of a deadblow hammer but it hasn't budged from the last few blows.  Any tips?
Cheers,
Cliff.

Thanks 750 but there's no wiggle room. I had to use a puller to get it off. I wonder if I heat up the basket to expand it then try to slip it on/in? Sounds kind of kinky but it is Friday night.
Cheers,
Cliff.

Heating will make it expand and the hole will be smaller.... DOH!! I'll try putting it in the freezer over night, when I get a puller to get it off.  ::)

Hi mc!
Don't know, I have several clutches and all the outers look the same. I'm trying another outer and I can get it about 1/4" away from home, it hasn't mated with the kick start gear and I'm afraid to keep pounding on it. The trans shaft is just held in by the 2 set rings and I don't know how much strain they can take without damaging the cases. It just doesn't seem right to keep beating on it. I must be missing something but the manual says to simply put it on the shaft.
Cheers,
Cliff.

Got it!! A little heat and putting the kick start lever on the shaft to better control the kick start gear meshing with the basket.  Still learning at my age - imagine!

Cliff.

Normally if you stop learning it's because you've been placed in a box  ;D
