Catastrophic bearing failure.

Note the missing balls from the exploded bearing...

It appears that there is a spacer that goes between the two bearings that I either forgot to put in, or the wheel never had. Looks like I've got to blame myself on this one... damn it...

when i built my wheels , i almost forgot that spacer .... eek

my rear wheel's spacer wouldn't cooperate so it got left out , havn't had any issues with it yet ... and it's been 3 seasons.

(so don't worry about the back wheel)

Well, $84 later, I should be back on the road. It's actually $39 in parts and $45 in shipping to make sure parts get here by the end of the week - which they came in yesterday. Got the wheel all back together and on the bike last night. I also got a side stand off of a DOHC CB750C which is about 3/4" shorter than the stock SOHC CB750K stand. I'm much happier with that one. It could still stad to lean over just a touch more, but it's FAR better than it was. On Sunday, I am planning on heading out to the Amercade Motorcycle Rally in Lake George, NY for the week on the bike. In Theory, I should be good to go.

It is Sunday the 6th of June and I am getting ready to head out to the Americade Motorcycle rally in Lake George, NY. And By god I am riding a bike that I build over there.  8) Of course, it's raining like a bugger...  :P That's okay though: It gives me a chance to check out how the bike will do in the rain.

I relaxed the throttle return spring a bit and re-oiled the air filters. I'll double check the tire pressure and top off the gas tank and then I'll be good to go. I'll post some pics when I get back.

The spacer takes the torsional load off the bearings.  Not using the spacer will cause the bearing to wear out prematurely.

I would say that is a big 10-4.  ;)

AND no sooner than I arrived at my destination, but the valve cover gasket sprung a great huge leak and the bike was grounded once again... DAMN IT!!!!

Doesn't appear to be anything major at the moment other than a bad gasket, but I'll have to pull down the top of the engine to know for sure. While I was there I tightened down the cover bolts just a touch more and the leak slowed, but it didn't stop. Then it got worse. I'm hoping it's not one of the pucks under the cam towers. It's just a major pain in the ass to fix those.

So, if you hadn't checked out the link above, the leak turned out to be loosening bolts/nuts on the cam holder that allowed oil to not pass up into the cam holder, but out the rubber puck instead: destroying the cam, cam holder, caps and 4 out of 8 rocker arms along with it.

Less that 400 miles on the bike since rebuild:

I got the head cleaned off:

I got a good deal on some used parts that were in good shape and bought a new cam. I went with the WebCam 63a grind this time (Hard welded - better than the billet I killed). I always kind of regretted going as mild as I did with the mild cam. I've got it bored out to 850, head ported and polished - why go with a mild cam?

Anyway, I got the new pucks installed (with just a touch of silicone sealant on them). I pulled and reinstalled the studs for the cam towers (with a bit of thread sealer on them). And I got the cam into place with the notch at 12 o'clock with 1-4 at TDC. Next comes dialing in the cam to be sure that I have it just right.

I'm sure that I can search and find it, but does anyone happen to have the timing specs for the Web Cam 63a handy?

Go to Dynoman's website and look under cams, I was looking around this afternoon and found cam timing info listed under various cams.

I just got through the entire thread.  Wonderful read.  I really love how this turned out.

And as for the setbacks as of late, I hope they make every ride more enjoyable in the future.   :)

Thanks. I think it turned out pretty good, too. And I hope these setbacks make every ride better, too.  :)

With any luck I might be able to get back out and work on the cam tonight after work tonight. While I have it torn down, I've got a few little oil leaks I want to address as well. Then I should be ready for another run.

Got the cam timed in finally. The next engine I build will have a Megacycle Cam. At least they give timing numbers you can believe. I replaced the gasket on the shifter cover to help stop that leak as well. Now I just need to swap in a new oil filter, put new oil in the bike and run an oil pressure test to make sure that oil will be getting up to the new cam and rockets and then I will be ready to button it all back up.

And, remember this?

He should be born any day now. Due date is tomorrow. Not sure when the bike will be all back together once he shows up.  ::) But, somehow, that's Okay.  ;D

Got the tappets all adjusted and buttoned up the top end

Then got everything else all buttoned up and plugged in the charger for a little bit while I had lunch

Took it or a ride. Synced the carbs. Took it for another ride. Feels nice to have it back on the road.  ;D AND, so far, anyway, no more oil leaks. I do have an oil line from the tank that seems to be a bit weepy, but I'm planning on replacing those old lines anyway, so I'm too worried about that.

The biggest thing that is bugging me is an inconsistent idle. The engine will race at 3-4K rpm for a little bit then idle down so low that it stalls out. I'm going to have to do some research and look for a solution to that. It's driving my nuts.

when i first put in my Megacycle cam , it idled very differently at low rpms (still does actually).. and it really made setting the timing kind of a chore as well  ... food for thought
