400-4 CLUTCH
« on: June 14, 2007, 06:42:59 AM »
The large gear riveted to the outer clutch housing on my bike has a few degrees of movement. The rivets are tight and there is no play between the centre and the outer case castings of the unit.
Should this play be there? If I try to centre pop the rivets, am I likely to crack the centre and outer clutch castings?
Anyone bolted this assy up?

So long since i looked at one of these I cant remember if it is supposed to have play or not. personally i would not hit any of the rivets but just re-fit it and in the meantime see if i could find another one to check

Well looking a bit further it appears that the big gear is designed to move a bit on the clutch casting, why would there be the rivets onto an outer steel sheet and not directly onto the gear? BUT my Haynes says somewhere that this should be tight! Also the gear rotation seems to 'land soft' as if there is some shock absorber in there, and does not 'clunk'.
I am not going to bash anything but refit it all as suggested, I only took it appart as it was very heavy and grabbing, ever since I changed the plates and springs a while ago.
Thanks for replies,
