cb450 valve adjustment

i adjusted my valves by turning the engine until the cam was at its farthest point away from the rocker, then adjusting that clearence to the specs. i did this on all four valves. good? bad? and if its the wrong way then what is the best way to do it?

i know someone here has adjusted the valves on one of these old twin. this is one of my last steps before i try and start it for the first time!! that and tackle adjusting the points and timing...

I had one years ago - but never adjusted the valves during the time I had it...

I would think that your method appears sound - as long as you know your clearances...and double check them...

does your local library have any information on the cb450 or somewhere else on the internet for the information you are after ???

      You probably already know the clearances, but thought I'd post them anyway 0.0012" (0.03mm) cold (for intake & exhaust). Your procedure isn't exactly like the book tells it but, if it works, go with it.

  The book says: (with the Points cover and Alternator cover removed) Rotate the engine counterclockwise until LT mark aligns with index pointer. Check the marks on both camshafts. Then rotate the engine 360 degrees again until LT mark aligns again. Check the exhaust valve clearances, adjust as necessary and repeat for the intake valves.

and i just got it started tonight!!! now its just acting like it has a vacuum leak (erratic surge at idle). i already rebuilt the carbs (floats might be off. i adjusted them with the needle spring compressed). its got clubmans, new cables, fuel lines, and petcock. it revved great all the way to redline! now i need to figure out the idle surge, set the idle, adjust the A/F ratio (will be a learning experience). if you couldnt tell already im pretty damn excited!

                 Sorry about that! That was from a Clymer's manual but, they should all be pretty much the same though. ;)

                 I can well imagine how excited you are about getting it running.Sounds like you've got an erratic surge yourself! ;D ;) 8) Congratulations on that and when you get things all ironed out to where you can go for that first ride, you'll be pumped all over again! ;)

I'm ageing myself, but remember adjusting the 350 and 450 valves by ear.   back the eccentric till you hear clatter, snug it when you can barely hear the ticking....leave a little...(presuming you don't have drag pipes)   I loved those torsion bars on the 450.
