oil consumption

How much oil consumption is normal for these old girls?  Say in between oil changes.

I have the infamous 1978 CB750K8.

I have known some big southern women that carried a cold piece of fried chicken wrapped in foil in their purse just in case they got a little light headed. ;D

do any of you folks have to carry a quart oil just in case your girl gets a little low?

This is my first cb so ...

I put in probably 1/2 quart between oil changes, and I suspect most of that is probably from the slight weep from the valve cover gasket on the left side.  I do carry a rag to occasionally wipe the head to keep the oil from spreading down the front of the engine, though.  If you have to carry a quart to keep it topped off, it may be time for a top end rebuild.

My CB400f uses virtually no oil between oil changes. If you're having to carry oil on longish journeys then either you have a leak somewhere or the top end (valve guides etc) are worn and need attention.

Ok well my bike has about 14000 miles on it. I have the EXACT same bike you have. NO oil usage at all that I can find. Other than my seal for my tach cable is bad. If you have no visual leaks, then I would check compression. Average seems to be around 135 for a compression reading. If you ahve low numbers then that would indicate that the problem is either with the rings or valves probably.
