Topic: Is anyone here familiar with older Suzuki street bikes?

I am trying to ID the Suzuki model bike that a tank I own came from. I have posted pic links here (thanks to photobucket!)





Is anyone confidently familiar with older Suzuki street bikes? I am guessing this is from an 80's bike. It is a peanut style tank, has a screw type gas cap receiver and Suzuki logo decals on both sides. There is a recessed area that surrounds the gas cap receiver, but no allowance for or any indication that a hinged lid was ever part of the tank's features.

This is a nice tank with wonderful lines, and potentially will look great on my CB500K2 bobber project....after painting it of course; I can't drive around with Suzuki stickers on my bike!

If someone can help, please let me know what you know or think.

Looks like it might be a Suzuki GS fuel tank.

I think you are correct. I looked at a couple GS550s from the early 80s and they look dead on. Thanks!

I can tell you it's *not* from an '82 GS550L; I have one of those and the tank filler cap isn't screw-in.

 I know a 'little' about them as I worked in Suzuki dealers through most of 80's
 Is the recessed area 'square'? (top down pic?)
 It may not be screw in but needs key to retract locking pins?
 Can you post some dimensions (across rear mounts and length)
 Possibly GN (single cyl) or GS, but, only thing for sure, its off a custom style (L= lowrider)

It is true, this isn't a screw in cap. As you say PJ, it takes a turn of the key to control the recessed pins.

The recessed area is not geometrically a true square, but it does have four sides. There are curves to the sides and the length of the sides differ.

Here is a fair image of this area:



Measurements of the cap (as best as I can figure due to its odd shape recess) are:

Width at the widest (in the center) = 3 1/4"
Length (front to back) = 3 3/4"
Width of the actual center filler hole = 2 1/4"

Thats a GS tank for certian..i have the same style of cap on my GS1100G

It could well be from an '82 GS550.  Strange...the factory color was gloss black.  Some maroon turned mine baby-puke blue.  (I think he used a brush...).  Damn thing's about the same color as the one posted at the top.

I think its a GS400/425 twin tank but may be the GN400L, 400cc single based on SP/DR motor
I don't remember 550 ever coming in that colour.
I'll try and check on Monday, wasn't able to yesterday

I guess it is pretty clear that this tank is from a GS or a GL. I was curious but it doesn't really matter.

I was able to track down a stock gas cap with key on Ebay for a mere $10 plus postage. It even came with the ignition set! (anyone need one?)

I compared tank mounts and this will be a pretty easy fit on the CB500 frame. I will have to cut away and reposition the mounting posts on the frame (they sit a little too low as is). Plus I have to cover the gas gauge port and fab a custom petcock port.

I will post some pics when finished I promise!


By the way, the color isn't as light a blue as these pics would indicate. The flash on my digital camera made it look that pale. It is actually a deep navy blue.
