Got This In My Email
« on: July 16, 2007, 07:50:54 PM »

Got an email from a "Jasper B. Reed". It says Fwd for the subject and has an attachment that indicates that it's an advertisement. Now days, there's a lot of crap going on on line and I don't have any idea who this guy is or what it is! Anybody had anything like this or know who it is.

I get junk all the time, it's worse than snail mail because they can send it for free. Many time's the people who's name is on it don't even know it's being sent or don't exist.

My computer once had a virus that rearranged the first and last names in my e-mail list, then sent out SPAM using the made up names, from my CPU.

Just delete it

Thanks Mark & Sam,  I thought it might be a bit risky and hadn't messed with it. It is History!

My household rule for emails: IF YOU DON'T RECOGNIZE OR KNOW THE SENDER, DELETE IT...DON'T OPEN IT !
At work, they have a service they subscribe to called "spam manager".  It works very well, and all the detected "spam" gets sent there.  You go to their website, login and you have the option of "releasing it" or deleting it, and it keeps you in box clear.

My work address has been out on the Internet for a long time now and since I frequently posted to the usenet groups, it must now be in every spammers list of addresses.  My spam box which only contains the last 30 days of spam currently has 4841 messages.  Needless to say, I never bother to look at any of it; thankfully Google's Gmail does a decent job of filtering this stuff out or my work address would be totally useless.

Mozilla thunderbird also has an excellent spam filter that learns what YOU call spam. It has a learning algorithm that is pretty spectacular.
Give it a try.
No.

Like Glenn, my email address has been out there for years.

I get about 100 per day but luckily they are all collected by my ISP and safely stored away somewhere.  As I use Outlook (rather than Outlook Express, it only collects email from the Inbox and leaves the rest.

I assume that the ISP (Orange - owned by France Telecom) removes them, otherwise they'd have gazillions of them!

I worked for a nationwide company once.  We got bullitens when a virus email was about to hit and were told not to open them.  And wouldn't you know, once it was an IT guy that opened one!
