Punctured alternator cover

Unfortunately I had an accident on Tuesday and I laid down my 1971 Honda CB 750.  After dusting myself off and lifting the bike off of my legs I took a look and noticed oil leaking out of a dime sized puncture hole in the alternator cover side.  The only other damage on the bike was a dented points cover and a broken clutch lever, no big deal. 

My question and delima is that I am getting in a replacement cover but am unable to take the current one off due to lack of proper tools and the screws starting to strip out.  I have a repair shop about 10 miles away and wonder if it would be safe to ride over and have them replace the cover and screws for me.  I started the bike up today and watched the oil pressure and watched for the oil light and thankfully did not turn on.  Placing my hand down by the hole I notice no oil but only a slight breeze.  If I could drive it would I need to make a makeshift plug or just ride as is.

I appreciate your help with my problem

Have you tried an impact driver on those screws? An alternative might be some easyouts.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I didn't think(dangerous) the alternator casing would carry oil. for peace of mind I would plug it

I might be able to get an impact wrench but I don't have one handy, I tried to use lots of elbow grease and a long handled screwdriver.  I don't have much in the way of tools myself but now it's the weekend and I finally have time to  talk to a couple of my automotive mechanic friends.

It doesn't fill with oil, but there is definately supposed to be oil in there. When you remove the cover (hopefully you do anyway) some oil will come out. Good luck.

It's not a lubricated part or part of the oil sump, in fact the engine has a dry sump so oil level won't reach the alternator  which sits about an inch higher. You'll find oil in there because there's no seal on that end of the crankshaft, but nothing major.

You risk however leaking oil into the rear tire track or path, so if you worry about this try sealing it with epoxy to get to the repair shop.

Main question is where did the bit that's missing go? you realy want to know where that is before you ride anywhere. is it on the side of the road or in the cases?

 My first 750 was wrecked when I got it, had the same hole in the cover and I just used some silicone caulk and aluminum to seal it untill I found a new cover.

Like Bob said, get an impact driver.  You can find them for about twenty bucks, and you'll need one to do any kind of engine work on the bike in the future, so why not just get one now instead of paying someone else to do it.

You will need to remove the shifter cover as well (to the right of the alternator cover and behind the gear change pedal) to get at the wirng connectors for the alternator in order to remove it, as it is attached to the inside of the cover. Once it's freed from the engine it's just a matter of swapping out the field and stator coils from the damaged cover to the other one.

You will want a new alternator and gear change cover gasket. The rubber plug that the alternator wiring goes through might not be as pliable as it used to be, so you'll want to apply a dab of sealer to it upon reassembly to insure against leaks. There are copper washers behind the 3 screws that hold the field coil in place (visible around the "HONDA" logo). If these are good shape, you can probably re-use them without any oil leaks.

sorry to butt in but have a quick question, and possibly relevant anyhoo:  i've got a nice looking cover (with spare rotor/stator assembly) that i'd like to swap out, since my cover's looking kinda tired.  can i just disconnect the 3 yellow wires, swap assemblies and reattach these 3 wires in any order?  thanks!

Open a bottle of wine and use the cork to plug the hole. Then when the wine has worn off ride to the shop.
