Help! Emgo Shorty
« on: July 21, 2007, 07:58:52 AM »
Ok Guys.... I've seen some pics with this muffler mounted, and they look pretty nice for the bucks. I went ahead and ordered one and, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to mount it! I think I got the inside diameter of the output pipe confused with the inside diameter ::).
I'm now running straight headers with one of them chrome tips from PepBoys, but I just moved to a small town with a large number of cops per population. I LOVE the way it sounds like that, but it would be wise to muffle it a bit. Especially since I don't have a motorcycle license yet!
Can anyone tell me a way to mount this b****?

So is the muffler too big or too small?
Go metric, every inch of the way!

The large end is the exact same diameter as the output pipe and the smaller end is too small. I bought some sleeves at PepBoys, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to drill into either part to secure them....

A muffler shop will be able to expand the muffler inlet tube to fit, but the chrome will be destroyed where it's expanded.

Dang! Is there any kind of adapter I can buy? Maybe I should return it to Dennis Kirk.
I might just try the drilling thing on the frame side, and screw it on. it was cheap enough.
I know some of you guys have used these. Maybe different years of bikes?

Two ways to go either sleeve it on the inside with a tube that has the same OD as the ID of the moffler/pipe, or pick up a coupler with an ID that matches the OD of the pipe/muffler.

Unless you have a bracket on the muffler you sould have at least two inches on each side of the 'seem' otherwise it will easily work itself out.

What I've done on hard to fit mufflers, odd size pipes etc for which they don't make off the shelf parts (my old mustang headers used an oval collector for one) is to pick up some light stainless sheet, cut a strip between two and four inches wide then wrap the joint a couple times and use two stainless hose clamps on it. position the clamps so all you see is the strap and it looks very good. also requires support of the muffler, or a very light muffler.

I bought a sleeve that'll fit inside both pipes. I'll have to drill and screw it in. I'll let you know how it works. What a pain!
Boy is it fun though!
