Leaking Carbs
« on: July 22, 2007, 07:24:45 AM »
I have a 1982 CB650C. I've been having trouble with gummed up carbs and used Sea Foam a few days ago to try and clean out the gunk.  Yesterday I went to ride the bike after deciding it was running well enough.  I got about 1/2 mile from home and the bike quit.  I pushed it home and decided perhaps it was out of gas.  I added a gallon of gas.  When it wouldn't start right away I decided to crank it at wide open throttle with the emergency shut off switch by the throttle in the off position.  I then cut back the throttle and switched the emergency switch back on and the bike started immediately and started running fine.

However, when I looked down I found that all four carbs were now leaking badly.  The leaks persist everytime I start the bike now.  If I shut off the fuel at the tank, the leaks stop and the bike continues to run fine on the fuel in the carbs and when I turn the fuel back on, all four carbs immediately start leaking again.

Do you suppose my accelerator pump is stuck open at wide open throttle position?

I've studied my shop manual and read all the related postings I could find on this site but can't figure out exactly where my accelerator pump is located.  I know it's supposed to be on the #2 carb but it's not located on the top front side as my shop manual suggests.  Can anyone offer me suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

The accelerator pump just squirts a bit of gas into the intakes when you open the throttle from about 1/8 open to about 1/2 open. It can't stick open and cause overflow - you get one squirt then you have to close the throttle to fill the pump up again for another squirt.
Overflow is most likely to be from gummy, dirty, or worn out float valves in the carbs. They are fairly easy to service or replace, the trickiest part is getting the float hinge pins out without breaking a post off. The pins should slide out freely but corrosion and gum can make them very stuck and the posts get corroded and fragile if the bike (and carbs) has been stored poorly.
As has been mentioned many times the actual overflow tubes - brass pipes sticking up inside the carb bowl - will split from freezing if the machine is stored outside in freezing weather and there happens to be water in the carb bowls. Then they leak. But a sudden leaking after doing work is probably float valves. Dirt in the gas tends to clog the valve and hold it open, possibly you stirred up some crud in the tank? A fuel filter in the carb feed tube(s) is good insuarance against this problem.

When you run completely out of gas, as in running the carb bowls almost dry, it's not all that uncommon for the floats to get stuck in the down position.  Try tapping on the float bowls with the handle of a screwdriver to see if you can free them up.
