Carb - 1 leaking like crazy
« on: July 07, 2005, 09:27:23 AM »
Had a carb leaking problem.  Took the carbs off, cleaned, or tried to and they were toast.  Got another set from someone on the board... clean but still needed some work.  Dipped em, cleaned em.  All the floats were looking good, moving properly and all was cleaned.  Put the carbs back on the bike and still have one that leaks like crazy... pissing out all over.

Any suggestions as to what to do??  I want to get on the road already!

Are you sure the floats are in fact floating?  If they (hollow brass floats) have a hole in them and become saturated, no floating and thus no fuel shut-off.  (OR) you have a worn float needle that's not seating or may have crud on the float needle/seat.

check the float bowl overflow tube for hairline cracks. With age, these standpipes will develop hairline cracks, and no matter how hard you try to set the float level,. the bowl will still pour out the tube. If you find a crack, seal it with a little jb-weld. Worked for me. Cheers! Mike.

Where is it leaking at? it it coming out of the tube or around the top of the bowl?

If it is the bowl top, then check float valves and probably replace if there is wear on the rubber tip. If you have brass floats, test them by floating them and submerging them to see if there are air bubble. Air bubble indicate a hole. Clean your overflow tube and hoses and replace your bowl gasket.

It the gas comes from the tube, then do the first part and check for tube cracks in the bowl.

I have fiber floats so I cant get holes and I have never seen a cracked tube. I get lucky with my bike on a lot of things!

My 400/4 carbs did the same thing after a rebuild. It ended up being leaks from where the float bowl fits onto the carb body. After a while the gaskets swelled and presto, no more leaks.

Did you use new gaskets/o-rings here?
