Heffay's resignation as Global Moderator
« on: August 07, 2007, 09:02:37 AM »
Hi everyone.  while this may seem like it stems from recent events, it was really only a minor catalyst.  here's a quote from a PM that I sent to the other mods this past weekend.
(I sent it so I can post it)

"Glenn,Bob,Steve~

I am a leader, I take action when I feel that action is needed.  But, I don't think that it is appreciated here by a very outspoken percentage of the membership so, I am stepping down.  I agree somewhat with comments being made by forum members that I should have discussed the boob thread with you guys.  I also stand behind my decision 100%.

That is really beside the point though.  This has been a wonderful and great learning experience for me while I've been in school but, I think I should focus my efforts elsewhere for the time being.  I will be done with school for good at the end of next week and at that point I'll be so busy trying to make something of myself that I think being a moderator will distract me from that.

Do I have any parting suggestions?  Yes.  I believe that the 3 of you are highly capable and I've not really seen anyone on this forum fit for the job that all of you have done over the past few years.  I would urge you to think long and hard about taking on another moderator as I don't think a forth is necessary.

Thank you all for putting your trust in me.  It means a lot.  I might also ask that you jot a few suggestions down for me concerning my leadership capabilities as I manage my own business and do consider myself a good leader that can and will always strive for improvement.  Whether they pertain to how I moderated or they are simply insights that you think would benefit me, they will be appreciated.

I do have one request though... I would like to remain the merchandise forum moderator since I still have much to do with that area of the site.  Obviously, I would not moderate content so much as organization, etc.  It will also make it easier for me to post merchandise announcements and needed info.  I don't really see any reason I would need to be the bike of the month forum mod but, if you'd like me to continue to set them up monthly that is not really a problem.  There would just have to be the understanding throughout the membership that I would be setting up those threads without anyone else's "help"... unless of course, I ask for it.  It will just get out of control if people start assuming that they should start up a nomination or contest thread just because I'm running late on accomplishing that task.

If you would like me to make a forum announcement, I can do that.  Although, I might actually prefer if Glenn did that.  Just let me know.  None of this information is too personal to me so if you'd like to refer to it (or cut and paste) in that announcement, it is fine with me.

Also, I'm not leaving!  I have vowed to never sell the 350f so, I kind of have to stick around   ;)

I wish you three the best of luck with this forum and I know that you really don't need it.
Thanks again for this opportunity!

Geoff "

I do have a few remarks...
*Perhaps, I could have handled the thread deletion situation differently or better but, I do think, in the end, the boob thread would have been deleted.
*It is fairly understood between the mods that discussion is always better but, it is not required.  The mods are there to make decisions according to the rules and I feel that I did that.  I don't believe that I went off half cocked... I acted in a manner that I felt best supported our great site.
*my reasoning for stepping down really has to do with my own priorities in life... this little SOHC screen says that I've spent over a month here... posting and reading.  while motorcycles are terribly important to me, I am young and motivated.  I should be out there making a buck, out in the garage fixing my SOHC4s, out hiking in the mountains, out there getting on with my life after college.
*it isn't that I probably won't be on here as much  ;) but, as a mod... I have felt required to be here nearly every day for about 2 years now.  I can't have that when I need to be self motivated to get my ass out of the house and run my business.
*if you have suggestions for me like I asked the other mods for... please do that in a PM.  I would prefer this thread to not become a constructive criticism/criticism for heffay thread.
*Lastly, and most importantly, I want to thank all of you!... over the course of my moderation, especially in the last week or two, I have received many PMs with suggestions that were not overly angry or blaming, but I got even more thanks for doing my best and simply being an active moderator for the forums.  We Honda lovers need to stick together.  and, we do.  we have become friends here and that is my favorite aspect about this site.

All the best,
Heffay

Well, the easy reply would be "don't leave, forget about the criticism" but then, a moderator doesn't get more from a forum than a regular user and instead he puts more of his time. If I were you I would do the same, but let me tell you that if you were appointed as a mod you were given authority to act as you think was better. If you deleted the post then so be it. I don't think there was bad intentions on your side; on the contrary, a lot of patience. You did what you thought was best and you don't have to apologize for that.

Heffay,

I hate to hear this and I don't think this is what anyone wanted!  I think you do a fine job and you must know that you will never do your job perfect in anyone's eyes... including your own.  Everyone does and will make mistakes on occasion (I am NOT referencing any decsion you have made), the key is to learn and move forward.

If you are making this decsion for other reasons, then I wish you luck, but if your decision is largely based on the recent events, I hope you will reconsider or that Glen turns down your resignation.   ;)

Hef, I hate to see it happen but, you gotta do what is best for you and you're the only one who knows what that is. Gonna seem kinda funny not having you as a moderator. You might get some PM's and emails concerning moderator stuff for a little while, cause it might take a bit for us, or at least me, to realize that you won't be in that position any more. Hope things are going well for you. ;) If someone else IS picked as a another mod, they're gonna have some big shoes to fill!

Heffay, I'm with Bill. I've always enjoyed your reasoned moderation in the threads I read.

One of the things I've learned is that when you work with good people, you know that they will eventually move onto new things, and you hope those things work out as better things. You enjoy and appreciate good folks while they are working for/with/on behalf of you, and you appreciate the work they did when they are no longer working in that role.

I respect your decision, although I will miss your moderation. I do not doubt that you will still be around, and I hope that relief from your role as moderator makes the forum more enjoyable for you.

P.S. Given what you said above, I do not doubt the meaning behind your handle (Heffay == el jefe, no?). ;-)

Heffay,

Thanks for all the time you've invested in keeping this forum a nice place to be. I fully understand you need to focus on other things in your life right now, there's just not enough time for everything sometimes.
I always figured if you're postcount is higher than the anual milage on your CB you've got to rethink your priorities. ;)
I really hope you stick around,  and I hope even more that this doesn't mean the end of the Bike Off The Month section as this is one of my favorites.

Geeze...I spent the last week working on moving from one house to another and I obviously missed ALOT!!! I have no idea what these "recent events" are so I won't comment (unless someone can share and fill me in!!!).

I will say that this site is VERY well mod'ed and you are obviously around 25% responsible for that!

I agree that priorities change over time and we all go through phases etc...I hope that at sometime your priorities shift back to modding but I feel comfortable that they will never shift from sohc's....and that is a very good thing!

Heffay, I gotta agree with the others here. You've done a great job! Your resignation is hard to swallow, but it sounds like it's the best thing for you given your situation. I'm glad you're not leaving altogether but it seems you'll be really busy soon so we won't see you around as much, so you'll be missed in the "general population" too. I wish you good luck in all you do!

Sorry to hear about your resignation, Geoff. But glad that you will still be around doing the club merchandising thing (and thanks for that, incidentally).  I think you have made the right decision about focussing on 'you' rather than on 'us', and I wish you all the best in your life endeavours!!

Hey Heff,

Thanks for all your work!  I'm glad you're not really leaving; that would be a tremendous loss.  Go get that 350 on the road.  I still owe you and Dad a beer, as I recall.  ;)

Dude, you are young. You have too much to worry about without having to Mod things. I can easily see why you felt you hard to be here everyday. It is a good time but begins to feel like a second job.

You do what you need to and just keep stopping in.

It seems like ages since we asked Heffay if he would like to be a moderator after observing his demeanor on the forums and his working getting the merchandise area running.  These past couple of years, he's been a real asset, stepping in when he saw reason and doing so in a measured, responsible way.  Hopefully, Heffay, your post-College endeavors still leave you enough time to participate here as a 'normal' member.  As always, you have my appreciation.

thank you everyone for the overwhelming support!
the comments are pouring in so forgive me if i don't respond to each and every one.

Given what you said above, I do not doubt the meaning behind your handle (Heffay == el jefe, no?). ;-)
^precisely, jefe means a few things... jeff, boss, big chief... you get the picture
since, geoff is not exactly jeff, i chose a long time ago to go w/ heffay instead... you know, something different.

and yea, the leadership aspect is one of those things i aspire to... i attribute it to being an aries, fire and dragon sign as well  ;)  i've also done some mentor work w/ young boys at the georgia okeeffe museum in santa fe, taken a leadership class here or there at school and just will not settle on anything less than running my own design/contracting biz.  its been going for several years now and i guess... its time to go for broke.  i'd rather go for it though... i've been broke

so, i'll raise that glass back up to all of you and say THANK YOU for helping me along my path.
