Canadian Help
« on: August 07, 2007, 01:04:53 PM »
Ok, I found a couple of Lada Nivas in Canada.
Just north of Toronto.

I'd like to get one driven into the States and you can park it at my place.
(I don't think it's smuggling ;D ;D) I'll have plenty of Canadian Beer on hand. ;D ;D

The other I'll get shipped in as a parts car.

What! I'm flabbergasted I just don't know what to say Dave!

Ok, I thought of something.

It has a Fiat engine I have lots of Fiat parts, it's 4X4
and actually pretty damn tough.

I can title it as a Fiat  ;)

It would be a good chainsaw hauler and cheap to operate.

So would a Toyota you say, but anyone can have a Toyota!  ;D

How many Lada Nivas have you seen in Canada?

Oh yea, I forgot to add, it looks like a Yugo on steroids ;D ;D

I suppose so - it also came with a 21 piece toolkit for roadside repairs. I've never seen one, but they do have a cult following with kooks.  :)  I couldn't in good conscience help you with that RM - don't you have some American vehicles down there that would do the job and not provoke your neighbors?

I seem to recall way back during the cold war (and something about a plane being shot down or something similar..and I am not joking I honestly don't remember the details) a dealership up here in the Toronto area picking one of those up with a crane and dropping it and basically destroying it as a symbolic gesture...pity they didn't have more of them to destroy...

there used to be a dealer up in my area...think it only lasted something like 3 years if that...they are an interesting lil unit but i would hedge my bets with a Suzuki Samurai or sidekick before i would drive one of those...

I thought you had pretty stiff emission laws in the States. Lada was banned from sending cars into the UK because they couldn't meet our not so stiff emissions.
The Lada motors are not Fiat but are built around a Fiat designed motor, even with the rest of the car most parts are not interchangeable, the door handles will not interchange and the same for the wheels.
I had a 124 Fiat that I used as a taxi and found it a good little runner. When I came to change it I decided to go the Lada route and bought a Lada saloon and a second hand estate as a back up car.
Both cars went round the clock twice, 200,000 miles with never a problem, possibly the most reliable cars I have ever owned.
In 82 I gave up the taxis and moved to the States. After I returned home I bought a second hand Riva estate car and apart from a cam belt snapping I had no problems with that car either until the new emission laws came into force.
Each year when the MOT test was due I had to weaken the mixture half a mile before the test centre and turn it back again after the test.
Eventually the MOT figured out what was going on with them and stopped the import of them.
Good little cars though IMHO.

Wait, I'm getting back in my chair............thing bucked me off..........

A fellow Fiater a Russian in Washington State is really fond of them (he would be right).
Anyway, if I could get one state side I'd have to go for it and swap in one
of my extra Fiat motors. I think the stock motor in the Niva is a 1600, probably a
sohc (see it ties into our sohc theme ;D)

But, I have 2 spare 1800 dohc's and 1 2000 dohc. So I could make a hot rod nive ;D ;D

I'll probably end up getting a Toyota or a Chevy S15...oh well..

Thanks Sam, I knew you could straighten them out ;D ;D
