My project

I started this project about 7 months ago. What started as an engine removal/top end job turned into a frame off redo.

Built the tank and seat myself, lots of lessons learned there.

I still have to respoke the wheels and some other minor details, but it's pretty much ready to go.

I have CBR 600 rear sets on it with a stainless steel adapter plate I made. It was actually pretty easy to set up, works out really good.

The tank hold 5 gallons now.

I have to modify the cherry bomb exhaust, a bit too loud for me.

Wow thats a lot of work! Nice! One question though - why is the rear of the gas tank higher than the cap? Looks like a crease/fold in the tank making it stick up at the back? Is this correct? Whats the idea behind that? Or am I viewing it wrong?

It is slightly higher than the gas cap. The idea is a "slush" area so the gas has a place to go rather than adding pressure to the vent cap on accelleration. Probably not needed.

The gas cap is leveled out by a stand welded into the tank and blended in.


I was trying to mimik the Dunstall style tank by photos, it looked like the rea was higher than the front so I copied that idea. I saw other pictures later and saw that was not the case, but the tank was already in process so I went with it. The lines all worked out in the end, low/high/saddle/low but in a boxy form.

I'd probably do it different next time.

Hey thanks for explaining that and it makes sense as I thought at first glance it was a Dunstall tank! Interesting idea about the slush part.

I ment to say slosh.

Anyway, it's a stock CB750 gas tank pan with a steel bottom plate, sides back and top added. I made steel stringers to form the shape.

If I were to do it again, I'd use aluminum and pop rivit the tank together as I'm going to fiberglass the seams anyway.

I agree.  I was going to suggest rolling it outside and getting some pics, but didn't want to seem impatient.   ;)

She's not road worthy yet, running WAY too lean. I've contacted Z1 about new jets so it'll be a few days.

It's stock.

The tank is 4 inches longer in the back, and sweeps forward (al la Dunstall style) in the front, so it makes the bike look a bit shorter.

No to mention the seat is very small and ends were the grab rail bolts on the the frame.
