Never thought I would do it, but I lost a chain!
« on: August 10, 2007, 11:23:30 am »
Was riding to work, and pulled off I-15.
At the intersection waiting to turn left a squid from work pulled up on his 1000cc (CBRR?).
Thought I would have fun, and see if I could keep up with him to the next light.

HAHAHA.... hit 9 grand in 1st, not too far off his tail, then shifted into second.....
engine died, heard an awful sound of metal grinding, and immedieatly recognized the sound of something metallic being dragged behind me....

coasted to the shoulder, and saw the damage.......

So, I called work, told them i'd be WAY late, and procedded to walk 1/2 mile to the nearest b ike shop, picked up a chain, chain breaker, and lube.

After fixing the problem as best I could in a parking lot with a crescent wrench, and pliers(re-setting tension on the new chain) I went to work... like I was driving a with a silk chain(nice and easy... and SLOOWWW)

I kept looking at where the chain broke trying to figure out why.....

I religously take up the slack every weekend(supposed to do this every 200-300 miles right?).

When I got home....
I took the cover off.... oohhh..... :(
pulled, pried, and un-wedged WAY more bits than I ever wanted to out of my motor.
Case externally looked ok.
On the backside.....
Looked like a amall hand grenede went off.

motor cases have significant damage to the ribbing as well.
but not a mark on my oil pump or the wires running through the cover.

After finding the missing chain plate in a recess in the motor case....
I looked close at that, and the link that came apart(did not break at the master link) I noticed the pins were not peened on those posts!!!
The side plate did have peen marks.... about 3/16 off center from the pins.

I contacted the manufacturer ab out this, and am awaiting their response as to whether they think if it was a  manufacturing defect.
If so, they said they wil replace the chain for free.
minor consolation considering the damage done.

but I lived without getting hurt at least....

If that had happened 3 minuites earlier, I would have been bdoing 80+ and would have either done WAY more damage, or seen how good my skills were at controlling a bike with a non-moving rear tire.
Possibly even getting to taste asphalt....

A chain coming apart a bicycle is NOTHING like one going on a motorcycle...

Ya got that right.

Very fortunate that it didn't fracture your case or even worse lock up the rear wheel.

Out of curiousity what type of chain was it?

You're also fortunate that you were only 1/2 mile from a shop that had a proper chain for your ride.

Tsubaki(sp?) 530 chain. the QR(?QS?) style. non o-ring.
And I thought the extra money over a cheapo would be worth it.

'Eh... I guess I will see how the chain I bought for 17.00 holds up....

Having to take up slack from the chain every week should have warned you of imminent failure.

Good to hear you were not hurt though.

the hard part was fishing the chain back on.
since the inner ribbing of the cover was gone, the chain kept balling up in the case.
Got lucky and pulled the chain through with a small branch in a position i'm sure is something along the lines of self torture.

If I can't fix it.... why ride it?

I broke a chain yesterday too!

I was actually on my way to the bikeshop to get a new chain put on when it started making a ticking sound.
I did hear this last month on a trip too, but I readjusted and aligned the chain and it ent away. I've driven 800 miles since then without the sound.
I slowed down a bit to hear the sound better, and the next thing I see is the chain dragging on the pavement.

Put the bike on a truck, and brought it to the bikeshop. The guy said that the link that was on the chain broke. Apparently the link was not the right type for the chain. It's an O-ring chain, and this type normally needed a link that was rivited. The APO thought it would be easier to take the snap-link from his old chain and use that one.
I'm just glad I'm not hurt, and hope it didn't do damage to the motor.
