72 CB350 stator/rotor, please help
« on: July 10, 2005, 01:36:26 PM »
Hi,

This bike is not charging batteries, the rotor has hardly any magnetism to it (should be good and srtong right?) And the stator does not touch the outside diameter of the rotor, should it be?

Thanks,

Bobby

CB350, (twin) or CB350F, (four)?  The twins use a permanent magnet rotor & a quick test, (the Newton test), is to see if it would dangle a medium size screwdriver against gravity touching only the tip.  The four uses an induced field supplied by the exiter coil, the current being supplied via the mechanical regulator and would have minimum residual magnetism.
Cheers, Don Madden.

Yes it is a CB350 four, not a twin. So there is little residual magnisism on the rotor, so should the stator brushes be touching the O.D. of the rotor?

In this innovative design no brushes are used as the exciter coil is fixed to the outer cover & fits into a recess in the rotor inside the rotating poles with sufficient clearance as not to touch.  The coil magnetizes the rotor which in turn generates current in the stator.  The down side is that, becouse of the spacing loss due to the coil to rotor air gap more exitation current is needed than would be required with a physical contact via brushes.  Alternator rotors should never contact the stators or they would soon overheat.
Cheers, Don Madden.

I'm with you Don. Only other thing, make sure the connections to the field coil are good. If there is a bad connection to the field then it will never charge. Really you should measure the resistance all the way from the regulator through the field to earth. This should be low.(3-5 ohms)
