Gas Bottle Tuning
« on: August 26, 2007, 07:44:55 PM »
I use a soda bottle with a cap I bought from an RC airplane dealer.  The hose and connectors are from Home Depot.  The laundry mesh is from the Dollatree.

I don't hook this up without finding the fire extinguisher.

How do you do it?

Geez I think you are too safe. :D I use a 20 OZ pop bottle with the bottom cut off and a brass fitting screwed into the cap. Then clear plastic tubing. A gallon jug of gas in case I start to run low in the bottle!

Works fine but not too safe now is it! But I cant see spending 30 - 50 dollars on a simple quart aux tank.

I can usually get the carbs synched with the gas available in the bowls, but on the occasion I take a little too long, the air vent nipple on my one gallon gas can fits perfectly in the fuel line.  I just refill the bowls and go back to it.

For mine, an old Honda 50 tank has been kept from the garbage pile for many years to do that with.

Sheesh that sounds too easy.  Plus I think I take much longer doing it!

I may be doing it the hard way, but I built a quick sling for my tank, threw the other end of the rope over a joyst and hauled it up a few feet, connected some clear line and turned the petcock on.

I bought extra fuel line and inline couplers.  And then run it over to the bikes own gas tank sitting on saw horses next to the bike.

Cheers,

I'd try something like that, but then I'd forget about the fuel line strung over to the tank and trip over it, pulling my nice, undented tank down to the concrete floor.

I knocked a tank over once, and only once, which resulted in me investing in some HVLP spray gun equipment and learning how to do body work and automotive finishing.  Ever since then, my tank is either sitting on the bike, or on the ground. ;D

I learned a different lesson.  I used to use one of those TV stands for the tank.  Worked for years rather well.  Then one day I put a FULL tank on it while doing the sync thing.  Seemed okay.  2 minutes later while my back is turned reaching in the toolbox I hear a crash behind me and confirmed the reason why they call those TV stands collapsible.  DOH!

Do I get credit for keeping it undented for 25 years?

Cheers,

Every so often I see somebody pitching out an old lawnmower on the side of the road. They usually have plastic tanks (maybe a litre or 2 at most in size) so if they fall tey don't dent or leak. I have 2 (not sure why I have to have a spare spare tank?!?!) and a 4 foot length of fuel line...

An old lawnmower tank would be perfect I think. Just clean out the old crap since some of the old ones you have to mix the gas and oil.

Oh yeah...one other thing...a pair of vise grips to act as a fuel shut off valve too! Forgot that the first time (also the only time I forgot it!)

Found this NOS fuel tank at a yard sale years ago. Probably gave a quarter for it. Never used it as it only holds a pint. I think it is about to become a Honda tool! ;D

Time to scrounge a petcock and a hose tee.

Happy trails!
