Trying to mount ignition switch on '73 cb500
« on: September 19, 2007, 04:51:55 PM »
I am nearing completion of my little project rat bike, and I am running into a small problem. I don't know (remember!) where the ignition switch mounts. In fact, I had to by an aftermarket unit from Sirius up in Ontario. I am missing a mounting plate. I assume it mounts to the frame, but the microfiche resources I have access to don't really help as far as showing anything definite.

It doesn't have to be anywhere specific, but I was thinking it would be good on the left side, just below and near the front of the gas tank. Between the bars is probably out. I eliminated the idiot light panel and I don't see anywhere for it to go up there.

Suggestions are more than welcome! Thx

I will be watching this thread also.  My 1973 ignition switch has been installed up near the handlebars using some kind of 70's aftermarket switch mount.  I want to return it to it's original location.

Found this in a 500-550 manual I have on a CD. Hope it helps.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I had these pictures laying around.  . .hope they help!  (1973 CB500 - obviously modified a bit but switch still in stock location)

The ignition mounts into a metal bracket that's kinda partially a tube that then mounts onto the frame with only one bolt (6mm). In the second picture, you are actually seeing the bracket to the left of the chrome flip up cover - the ignition is mounted inside. Sooorry that description is retarded but I don't have any  pictures of the switch and bracket thingy disassembled!   :P
