tach plug/centre mounted speedo
« on: September 28, 2007, 11:44:32 am »
Has anyone taken off their tach and used a tach plug for the port (in place on the cable)?
I found a chrome tach plug at cycle x........wondering if I should put a new seal in?

I tried the pointy chrome one off a ebay. It didnt fit right managed to break the screw off in the valve cover. Drilled it out and re-taped to m6 now has a proper 8mm head on it instead of the easily stripped screw. Cut off the end of the old tach cable so it would protrude a few mm's from the valve cover, screwed in a self tapping button head screw in the whole where the cable came out with some rtv on it to seal it. Works great. ;D

thanks for the help. Are you running a stock speedo? I work in the steel service industry and was thinking of gettin one of the small fab shops I deal with to make up a bracket to centre mount the stock speedo. Has anyone done this?

I just cut the end off my tach cable, tapped the hole and put a small cap screw with an o-ring and some blue loctite and then cut an o-ring groove in the o.d. of the housing. No oil leak for me. I also took 2 pieces of 1/8" X 1" steel strapping and made my own speedo mount to center it. Took about an hour to drill the holes, bend and twist it to suit and paint. I think mine looks good and it holds the speedo very solid. No problems with viberation at all.

I can see that headlight clearance issue would be my main concern, although if I end up using clip-ons I may be able to lower the headlight a bit.
thanks for the pics!!!

Would something like this work for your tach plug? I made it from aluminum bar stock, so it should polish up nicely if you want the chrome look.

It's a slip fit plug that I made. Add a little RTV or O-ring  under the head and it shouldn't leak at all. OEM bolt holds it in place.

I could probably make a decent center mount for your speedo as well. Let me know if you'd like me to whip something up.

If Melon wants it, it's his free of charge. I don't really have a use for it - just wanted to see how hard it was to make it.
