Seperating alternator rotor from crank cb400
« on: July 17, 2005, 08:46:19 AM »
Does anyone know of a way to seperate the alternator rotor form the crankshaft besides using the Honda specific tool?

I tried using a standard puller on the rotor, I slacked off the bolt that secures the rotor to the crank, and that is the torque point the my puller is working on but I don't want to damage it(the rotor)... that thing is on there SNUG! Do I just increase the pressure until it comes off?

I need to change out the oil seals on both sides of the crank.

Thanks

These things really weld themselves on.
Set your pullers at a good pressure. You should feel at this stage that the thing will take off..!
Get a soft hammer / mallet and direct a few good blows to the end of the puller, It should come off with a bang.

It hurts to admit when you've made mistakes, But when the're big enough, the pain only lasts a second

Make up a simple slide hammer. A length of 1/2" steel rod about 12" long with a stop on one end and an adapter to fit the thread in the rotor on the other end. Put a 2 pound chunk of steel with a 1/2" clearance hole on the rod. Screw it firmly into the rotor and then slide the steel firmly out against the stop. My rotor came off after two wacks.
