AWESOME VID  love the editing , what software is that?

I put it together in Premiere Pro, but the GoPro has the ability to take continuous pictures at .5, 1, 2, and 5 second intervals. Perfect for time lapse video.

Nice work! I'd almost be afraid to ride something that's nice and well done. How did you wire up your tachometer? I'd love to get something more accurate than my 40ish year old mechanical do-dad.

CB550 Cafe Interceptor - Cam & Rocker Issues
« Reply #303 on: June 27, 2012, 08:58:38 pm »
Hey kids,

Here's a lesson better learned through someone else's stupidity.
When Web Cam says you need to run hardweld rockers with hardweld cams, you do!

Engine started to get a bit noisy in the valve train and I found a couple rockers way out of spec so I went looking for cause.
This is the result of not running hardweld rockers with the Web Cam hardweld cam.
Needless to say, the cam it toast too.

Not that many.
The Interceptor is a casual rider and doesn't see that much street duty.

Oh no! That sucks. You gonna have that thing ready in a weeks time? Just an FYI Delta camshaft can fix your cam. I just had them repair my WebCam 41 for about $100. They are in Tacoma.

Tough pill to swallow Jimmy. I've seen this before a bunch of times and it always involves both cam and rockers. The good news is with hardwelded rockers and cam, the surfaces will continue to look new for years.

Shhhhh... Delta's a secret!

Fine, cat's out of the bag now.  We use Delta for hard-welding all the time. Reasonably priced, fast and professional.  They also have thousands of cam profiles in their machines, and can make nearly anything.

Anyway, that sucks Jim.  Should be a much stronger ride with all 4 cylinders pulling together.
Take care,
David

Pulled some excellent rockers from a donor motor I’ve been keeping under the work bench and installed a mystery re-grind cam that came with the Yoshimura pistons. The guy claimed that the cam was a Yosh, but being a re-grind, I highly doubt it. Will be interesting to see how it feels though.

Buttoned it all up and pulled the trigger around 1:30AM.

Should have known better Brent. Won’t do that again.

Embarrassed to say that I also discovered the Web Cam was timed one tooth out!
I got the ignition timing and idle issues that plagued us on the dyno resolved too.
Maybe cresting the 50HP mark is doable.  ;D

So, if the cam was retarded - so it wouldn't idle without the timing over-advanced, and you'd lost a bunch of lift -- which combined with the ignition timing hurt you on the top end.

I hate to make assumptions, but I think your numbers will be much better.  Depending on which way the cam was out, 50-53rwhp should a reasonable target.
Take care,
David

David,

The cam was rotated clockwise (when viewed from the right) by one tooth.
I don’t know if that’s retarded (like the installer) or advanced.

If the cam was rotated clockwise, then it opens the valves later and was retarded - by quite a bit.  What's one tooth?  10 degrees?  Normally, a retarded cam moves the HP higher in the power band because the enigne is not working against compression as the exhaust valve closes later than it would have with the cam "straight up."  However, the effective range is about 4 degrees.

If you were retarded one-tooth, you were two and a half  times further retarded than the maximum effective range.  this would cause you to lose a significant amount of cylinder pressure at low rpm's.  Advancing the timing increased the cylinder pressure to the point where it would idle.  Add to that the cam damage...

That's my theory anyway.
Take care,
David

So, the good news is that this mystery cam is certainly a performance cam. The specs remain unknown, but it has a solid bottom end and very lively from 7K on up to red line.

Bad news……carb jetting doesn’t feel right anymore.   :(

Ok, just back from a two day trip through the North Cascade Hwy and into B.C. with Branden & Wookie and the bike is running like a champ.
With this mystery cam correctly timed and Doctor_D's jetting, that 48.8 HP is in my rear view mirror, Baby!

See for yourself.

I just finished reading your build thread after two days. I must say that your fabrication and thought to your bike was mind blowing. I have been working in a machine shop for the last sixteen years as a CNC laser machinist and I saw what you did with a freaking drill press and needless to say, I was very impressed. I have a line on a 79 cb750 and after reading this thread and seeing your awesome bike I am buying it. My shop has 6 Bridgeport milling machines and three Hardigne lathes, not to mention the two lasers that I run and program. Also have press brakes for bending, a 550 lincoln mig and a tig welder, I think I can come up with some cool custom stuff with your inspiration. What an awesome thread. Thank you

Damn Jimmy ! You got skills brother , and an eye for detail !

I have spent a solid 5 hours reading the entirety of this thread and I am in absolute awe , Thanks . With that being said ; I do have a question ... I have noticed a couple of mirror changes . Did you fab the latest , or did you purchase them ? They look fantastic and I am currently in the market for some good ones (not the awful ebay ones for $10) such as yours.

Thanks again for such an informative thread bud !

Thanks for taking the time to run through the build.
Project bikes are constantly evolving and mine is no exception.

I first started with Napoleon mirrors and quite liked them, but found round Rizoma mirrors on ebay and thought I'd give them a try.
A bit higher quality than the Napoleon's, but the Napoleon's looked more period correct IMO.

I know why you've got plans to change the front fender FJ. But there is something to be said for a slightly longer fender that keeps the crap out of the engine. That 500 Interceptor job I use is decoration only, twenty feet in gravel with a hot tire..... crap. It's fine if we can pick our weather to ride I suppose.  ;)

Brent,

That was the thinking and justification for keeping the rear fender too, and I'm glad I did, but I rarely find myself in inclement weather on the Interceptor.
It's all about vanity.
