Welcome back my friend, to the show that never ends...
« on: October 15, 2007, 08:18:00 PM »
Well, almost a month late, but it finally happened. Got the surgery done and after spending 8 days in the Hospital I am home again. It seems that no matter what precautiions I take, something gets screwed up, lol. They changed the location of the graft from the hip to the knee at the last moment, they nicked my neck muscle when they put in the clot filter making it ache for 5 days, they found a torn tendon in my knee from an old injuury that never healed right(wondered why that knee never worked right), the nurse tried to OD me with anti-coagulants, and last but not least, a few days after the surgery, they pulled the drains out from the leg and they wouldn't stop flowing, almost needed a transfusion, lost that much blood. Completely soaked three towels trying to stop the flow. I am still a bit dizzy but doing better. I fainted when it happened, all that blood pouring everywhere.

Anyway, here I sit, in my wheel chair once again, leg feeling like it went through a woodchipper, and no drugs are helping the pain. I'll just give it more time, it is the only thing I have plenty of right now, right? lolol.

And to top it all off, I dropped my camera, a brand new Olympus Digital, so no new pics for a while.

Rita sits out front, stripped down to just the engine, waiting for me to get the rest of the parts to start working in earnest. I figure January I can start getting the final parts and supplies, and I'll be ready to start getting her ready for the road again. It has been a long road, but this ride will be the last off the bike. I should be back in the saddle by summer.

Talk to you soon,

Jeff

Hang in there DustHawk! Just remember that it is facing adversity such as you have (and continue to do) that makes us stronger and really appreciate what we do have! Just think...in a few months that first ride back on Rita will be that much sweeter! (I was going to paraphrase with "whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger" but given the drain issue and the transfusion talk I figured I would avoid that line!  ;) )

Glad to hear you are on the mend!

Actually, that is why she got Parked in the first place. I was on my way to a Dr.s appointment for a check up before I got injured and when I got off the freeway, I went to hit the brake and my foot slid right off the foot control. Rita pissed oil all over the right side of my bike and my foot and leg. I limped her home after putting more oil in her and left her parked until I could get to work on her. A week or so later, I was injured and have been dealing with that ever since.

I'll be in the electric wheel chair for 4 to 6 months. In the last month or so my Dr. wants me to start walking again, a few feet at a time, then going longer and longer over the course of a month or two, then no more chair.

The problem is that the Talus, the bone that got the graft, takes a long time to heal. My knee will be better within the month, but the Ankle will take a lot longer.

Tell me something. Why can't God cut me a break? Seems that a post op infection has set in nice and deep. My foot is cherry red and swollen until it fills the splint. The wrapping is so tight it is cutting my foot. I talked to my Dr today and he said it was okay to cut the wrap a bit to relieve pressure and got me on a series of antibiotics. More news to come on friday after he removes the splint and gets a look at the surgery site.

Sorry I haven't been on, it's been a hectic week. I really do appreciate all the good thoughts from all of you. If it weren't for all of you they probably would have just amputated, lolol. Prayers do help a lot and knowing you are all out here keeps my spirits up. Otherwise I would be so far in depression I wouldn't come out of the trailer, lol.

Talk to you soon,

Jeff
