CB500 Wiring HELP!!!
« on: October 17, 2007, 06:24:41 pm »
Hey guys,

I'm trying to get the wiring finalized on this bike and short of making my own wiring harness from scratch I need to get a few issues resolved.

1.  If you look at picture number one you will see the side cover removed and you can see the red/yellow wire has a black wire spliced onto it by a P.O.  I'm not sure what this was for.  I guess I can just remove it and tape over the splice area.

2.  Also in picture number 2 you can see some sort of winker.  It only has 2 plugs and the green wire is not connected at all.  The green is the ground.  The wiring diagram shows all 3 wires connected to the winker.  Is is OK to have the green left off?  Should I get another winker with 3 prongs?

3.  If you look at picture number 2 you can see the rat's nest of wiring in the headlight bucket.  I have 2 black wires that are coming out of the right handle bar switch.  They are the 2 male connectors on the left side of the picture.  I assume these are for the engine stop and the high/low beam.  I assume they plug into the double male connector on the right side of the picture.  I assume that the black wires are all switched power sources.  Is all that correct?

4.  All of the after market signals that I bought and installed have 2 wires and a plastic body.  The original signals have a metal body and one wire.  The ground from the wiring harness attaches to the mounting point of the turn signals.  I wired the ground wires to the black turn signal wires with the white stripe and the power wires [Orange and Blue] to the black wires on the turn signals.  This should work... Right?

OK...  So here's the problems...

1.  The blinkers don't work when the switch is on.

2.  With the switch on the bike will turn over using the the starter button, but when the switch is on the wire going into the fuse starts to get pretty hot.  It doesn't blow the fuse, but it gets hot.  Is that a short?  How do I track it down?

3.  After talking with JTB tonight he is wondering if maybe there is a short in the blinker switch which may be causing both problems.

Any suggestions or comments.  Any help would be appreciated.

Mark,  Undo your ground wires that you put into the black and ground them to the frame and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks Einyodeler,

I already have 3 different wiring diagrams printed out, including one in color, but yours looks different than the other three.  I will print it out too as a cross reference.  I think after talking through everything with JTB last night I think it may be a short in the blinker wiring somewhere, because the blinkers won't come on at all when the switch is on, and the fuse wire is getting hot with the switch on.  Everything else works like it should so far.

JTB,

I'm not sure which ground wires that you are referring to?  The only ones that I wasn't sure about are the black wires that are coming out of the idiot light cluster.
