It was tried before on the sohc4 forum and didn't end up getting much use.  I think mainly because we tend to use the forums themselves as a chat-room.

I don't type fast enough for chat.  Only 2 fingers and an occasional thumb are used

As Gordon says, we used to host one here on the site.  It was seldom used and a PITA to maintain in the light of SMF software upgrades.

I suggest you try it. Advertise on here and see what happens.

I did that with a couple of guys here.  I was flattered to be invited.
It was a lot like the walkie-talkie fad about 45 years ago in grade schools;
pshht  "Who's there?"
pshht  "Me"
pshht  "Who?!"
pshht  "You know who I am!  Where are you?"
pshht  "I'm around the corner in front of Mrs McGillicutty's house."
pshht  "What are you doing?"
pshht  "Talking to you, dummy. What are YOU doing?"

Then  "Well guys, I have to be at work early tomorrow"
         "Yeah. Me too"
"Well, this was fun!  Let's do it again soon!"
         "Yeah- good idea"
         "Seizure"
         "Good night everybody"
         " 'night Ernie"

For a few moments I thought I had some friends, but I cried myself to sleep as usual.  I don't think I could do that again.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

GEM of a post Uncle Ernie.  :D :D :D :D

Too true too true.....

But  I have though it could be a good idea.  As you can see who is browsing the forum and posts it would be cool to chat them up.....

I will look into this.  There are a couple of potentially interesting possibilities such as Google adding the feature to Google Apps (there is an sohc4.net account there); or a place like Ning adding this.  That way we can set up our own private area.

As a test, I set up an area at http://www.meebo.com.  You can sign on to meebo with a Google Talk, Yahoo, MSN, or AIM account - no need to create a new account.  The room is SOHC4; the password is sohc4.

Now, let's see if anyone shows up. :-)

I signed on to have a look and couldn't find the SOHC4 room anywhere ???
Is it hidden or something?

My bike can be repaired.

I don't know what happened.  I think private rooms don't work the way I expected, so I created a room called SOHC/4 OC - if you search on sohc4, you will find it or you can go to the URL directly: http://www.meebo.com/room/sohc4oc/
