besides the shop, is yourself. Remember to eat something and bring a coke or something with lots of sugar in it. Or you'll start blackin' out like I did a little sissy.
everything I say is pure speculation and

This is true. On my 13th tattoo, I didn't eat because I was running late.

I find that it's good to eat high protein about 30-1 hour before your appt. Then, when you start to feel woosy, like Industrial says, sugar will help keep your blood sugar at such a level to where you won't crash.

Funny story, a girl came into the shop I worked at and wanted her tongue pierced.
She talked to us about it for a while, signed her papers, and went and sat in the room and waited. She was a squirmer. Everytime he tried to clamp her, she would complain and move and cry and what not. (this makes the artists mad)
He finally got her and said, "just hold still, you're going to be fine as long as you don't move."
He does the deed, she's admits to how much of a wuss she was being and pays her fee.
She suddenly got very white and I told her she should sit down and take it easy. She says something snotty about how I was just made cause someone was as tough as me, then she walks out of the parlor, safely crossed the street and then passes out mid-step in the field across the street.
We all kinda chuckled and then went over to see if she was ok. She was fine after one of the guys put a package of sugar in some water and made her drink it.  ;D

theres a shop out here that does really great work, and has a wall of shame. if you pass out they have a pair of (unused) pink panties they put on your head and snap a pic. than up on the board you go. there cool about it though, they tell and show everyone before they start and if you ask them not to do it they wont. some of the pics are funny as hell though. one is of a guy whos gotta be about 6'3" maybe 200 lbs and in all his harley "i bought myself a lifestyle gear". the guys that own the shop are all bikers, and have been riding and building harleys for 30+ yrs. they said when he came in to get a big harley logo on his chest he was actin all high and mighty like he was a reall badass. he couldnt even remember what year his bike (his first) was, and kept makin fun of the guys for riding "those old pieces of crap". kept sayin real men ride this kinda bike or that kinda bike. not old "crap". They were only about 15 min in and as soon as they hit his chestbone he started sweating...... long story short, he told them to go on and within 5 min he was out cold, and on went the panties.

+1 on the blood sugar thing.  From the 'med-science' aspect, (you were curious, weren't you?) the perceived pain stimulates your sympathetic nervous system (no matter how chill you are about the whole thing) and you start pumping out endorphins, which make it hurt less.  A byproduct of this sympathetic stimulation, though, is that you start consuming glycogen reserves, your metabolism goes way up anticipating lots of action (fight or flight) and pretty soon you burn through the sugar reserves in your system.  Simple sugars will save your arse in the short term but Ink was totally right, proteins and complex carbs, a little fat (not too much or you might honk) a little over an hour before you go in will help keep your sugar levels even.
I also suggest someone to drive you home, because the endorphin buzz can be pretty rad, and it's hard to concentrate on driving right. (at least for me it is)

...I have way, WAY more piercing experience than tattoo experience, though. Listen to Ink, she's our resident expert. ;D

These are some good tat's ! Ink your funny, white skin can look good if done right like spike said.
sorry I finally got time to read this thread, now I gotta get pics of my few tats and talk jazz about how I want a full vest someday.... Like the chinese mafia do it, that's how I will look. Mainly for the I am a clean white boy look to fool all who judge books by their cover, then they get a peek of something sticking out my neck, sleeves of my shirt and  then say "oh when he bent over and his shirt pulled up a bit it looked like everything was covered  :o . That's when I give the finger letting them know that they are number 1, smile and go on about my way. :D
Now I just need to find a place that will trade me work for work, I am a sign guy ya know... I have a light box made up right now for transfering that I want to make more of along with some neon work that I am looking for the right person to barter and trade with....

Martino-

What kind of work are you after? Is the style or type of tattoo you want one of the artists fortes, and or are they excited about the idea of doing it? Have you seen her work in person, the online gallery she has is un-impressive (her lines look weak, solid areas are pretty spotty, her "big" work really isn't.....)
Do you and the artist have a good rapport? Is she comfortable drawing your design, 'cause if she can't even draw it well, she could never tattoo you with it and do it justice. "flash" or designs drawn by someone other than the tattooist are something to avoid unless the artist is really strong, contrary to popular belief. If the tattooist is just "tracing" a design, with little understanding of the design itself and the weight and purpose of each line within the design, as well as a good understanding of how the muscles and skin work in the area you are getting it, it will look "flat" and cartoony.

I was a tattooist myself for a while, trained by one of the legends of 20th century tattooing, Pinky Yun, and have a pretty good understanding of how it works, and the things that separate a fine tattoo from something sub-par. I stopped doing it for a number of reasons, not the least of which being I didn't feel like I was technically proficient enough to make really fine tattoos. If you are going to do something like tattooing for a living, you had better be damn good. There are way too many marginally skilled tattooists out there, and nothing sucks worse than getting a #$%*ty tattoo.

DONT rush your decision on design or artist.
If this is something worth getting, it is worth waiting, researching, and getting it done RIGHT the first time.
Good tattoos aint cheap, and cheap tattoos are rarely good.
Rapport with artist is as, if not more important then the artists skill when it comes to custom work. If someone can do the coolest skulls you have ever seen, but you want a portrait of a Panda bear or something, and the skull dude isn't into it, or doesn't "get" your vision/idea, you aren't going to be pleased with the results. The tattooing process should be pleasant and 2 sided, and the artist should value your ideas and input, and you should respect the artists skill and understanding of things you couldn't begin to understand. The respect should go both ways.
The tattooists I respect most are those who really know their strengths, and are willing to turn away work that doesn't fall into their scope of expertise, and more often then not suggest the right person for the job.

hope this helps and I didn't ramble on too long
lmk if I can guide you any further

interesting things your saying there,78cb750cafe....
any one else have the same opinion about her work..?????

she said the carb would not be a problem for her to do,but ive only seen one person  life with work from her....

Any reputable Artist will not tattoo you if you are drunk.

I like how someone tagged this thread about my boobs. Classy!
Yea, i don't know any reputable artists that will tattoo you under the influence of anything.
There are three rules to drinking. These are things that shouldn't ever be done while drunk.
1. Get a tattoo
2. Drive
3. F*&k a stranger

When in doubt, at least make sure that you can perform acts #2-3 to avoid breaking rule #1.  ;D
