Have you donated to the board? I have an idea you might like!
« on: November 12, 2007, 03:02:26 PM »
I ride these old bikes because they are in my budget.  Once I started, it seems to have turned into quite the obsession.  :-[

So to drum up extra cash for things I want for the bike, I sell parts.  I sell them here, on my website, and on ebay.  I sell them for less then half of what the local salvage yard does, so it's not like I make a killing.

I know some of you guys were born gear heads, this is not the case with me.  In fact I would most likely still be looking for the on/off switch on my petcock if it were not for the wealth on info here, and the guys that share it.  So how can a dirt poor guy like myself give back?

Then it came to me!  Why not give parts away with a minimum donation to the board?  I have parts that are not big selling items, but I'm sure someone can use.  So I figure that I can start a post in the "For Sale" section labeled "Donations."  I could have a couple lists labeled, $10 minimum, $20 minimum, etc.  You make the donation and I cover shipping within reason.  Some of you guys outside the states or getting heavy items may have to cover shipping.

So what do you think?  Good, bad, ugly?  Give it to me strait.

That sounds good. Have you run it by the bosses. I just got back into bikes so I have very little to sell off anyhow. Maybe I could lump a few things together. 8)

I have odds and ends sitting around that I am sure others can use.  Would donate to other members of the SOHC forums if they pay shipping.

Question: how to address folks who join to forum for the purpose of ebaying our donated goods?  This would have to be addressed.

Minimum post limit prior to asking for donation?

I'm not talking about something for nothing.  I'm saying instead of paying me for certain parts, you pay the board.  For instance I would post a CB750 air box for a minimum donation of $20.  You donate $20 or more to the board and email me the "code word" Glen gives you.  Once I get the code, I ship it out.  What you do with it is totally up to you.  Sell it on ebay, I don't care (that's not meant to be as aggressive as it sounds  ;)).

The whole point is to drum up donations.  I can't just pop $50 to the board, but I can send out $50 worth of parts and the members that would have paid me for them can just pay the board.

I pretty much got the OK from Glen, we are just hammering out the details.  I hope to have a thread started by next week.

Hi  Cleveland,

I think this is a pretty sharp idea.

Keep at it.  I think you're on to something.

I would be a willing participant.  If I chalked up the amound of money saved by the wealth of information and the community that is this forum, it would definately be in the hundreds.

Cheers,
Ben

Thanks for explaining your concept.  I get it.  If this thing passes through, I would round up bits and ship them out so that the $$$ could be donated to the forum site.  Five years worth of advice that has helped me keep the bike on the road is priceless.  I can't even put a dollar amount on it.

I like that idea Cleveland!

I wonder if Glen couldn't open a "donation parts" area, where people could post their items they are willing to donate to generate funds for the site.
I know I have a few cb750 & cb650 parts I want to offload(need to get rid of), and the scrap yard isn't where I want to take them..

Who gets credit for the donation, just the buyer or does the person selling get some credit too????

Please disregard this post, I had a brain fart. It's hell to get older. ::)

:D  I have thought about that and I think I will add a "participated in this program" list to the post in the sales forum.  This way everyone that had contributed (buyers and seller) will get a general acknowledgment.  Transaction details will be left out, but I think a list of name will show the programs progress.  I guess that was a long way to say, both deserve credit as both are giving something.  ;)
