Hot wiring a SOHC
« on: November 17, 2007, 09:42:14 AM »

I've got a 75 400 F that has no wiring harness.  I am curious to see if the motor will run.  There is compression and the carbs open and close.
In the "old days" you could just run a wire from the positive side of the battery to the positive side of the coil ( on cars) and short the starter selenoid.
Any body out there have any experience with this?

Same thing, but make sure you feed both coils

...and make sure that your coil ground wires and still going through your points.

I am able to get spark on one coil but the other gets nothing.  Could the coil be bad?  When i run he hot wire from the battery to the black and white wire on the coil, I can see a slight arc when the connection is made.  The suspect coil has no such arc from the hot wire.

Any ideas?

i'd simplify matters and run the lead to the junction where both coils bl/wh connect together, so you know you're getting the same current to both coils. are you testing for voltage at the points, or are you just looking for spark? when i'm checking an ignition system for juice, i use a multimeter or test lamp and check both points for voltage when open. if you are getting voltage but still no spark, the points on the offending side are probably corroded and not connecting, effectively creating all dwell and no charge for the secondary circuit to fire.

Checked the otherside and got voltage at the points.  All systems are a go !

Thanks
