Is this worth picking up as a new project
« on: November 20, 2007, 07:51:09 AM »

Some guy gave these pictures to my roommate to see if I was interested in buying his old bike.  I dont know anything about it other than its an old british bike.  Figured I would see what you guys thought before I called the guy to get all the details.

An old BSA?  Are you kidding?  Offer $200.00-$300,00, and try not to drool.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Does anyone know what model this is?  I am at work so I dont have time to call the guy and get all of the information.  I can check the internet every so often, so I was hoping maybe you guys could help satify my curiousity.  This bike is in the Dallas area and as far as I know its not listed for sale anywhere.  Some how a friend of a friend ran into a guy with this parked in his shed.  They talked about it about then these picks were given to me to see if I wanted it.

Looks like it might be a 500? Single carb is not the hotrod model. looks like mid 60,s.

Just search BSA 500 twin and plug in a tear like 65 or 66 and see what turns up.

It is unit construction.... meaning gearbox is inside same case as engine.

Definitely worth getting! 8) I'd bet it's a unit contruction model. Not saying it's not a 500 but why couldn't it be a 650? Like was said, not a high performance model. Yeah, I'd be picking up on that one and risking divorce at he same time! ;D ::) That is, unless I unloaded a good portion of what I've already gotten. :D Let us know what you find out about it and what you decide to do. ;)

 Verry narrow rims.

Notice the K2 down front fender! ;D
Requires a lot of the expensive parts to do a restore to it. The single cab versions are not nearly as desireable as the hi-po models (Spitfire and Lightning), but a neat piece nevertheless.
And once you get it going - you'll have a new appreciation for the Hondas. I worked on Triumphs and Nortons at a dealership during the summers of 1970 and 1971 and you'll quickly learn why the Japanese invasion killed them off. But the nostalgia value alone is worth getting it.
We would have backward races with the Brit bikes. Put them on the centerstands and rev them up. They'd walk backward across a concrete floor. ;D

And you will also learn why Lucas is known as the Prince of Darkness.

I'd guess it is a Thunderbolt.

*EDIT* An you'll also get to know the Amal carb dearly. A company in California use to make intakes for the Brits to adapt Mikunis to them. Worked wonders for the the start, idle, throttle response.

It beats me why you Americans drool over British crap :D :D :D :D  Why do you think they were exported to America in the first place.

Nobody wanted them over here, when they could buy a Honda of half the size and price, and still out perform them. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I had an older Triumph 750 tri cylinder and that cured me of  the british bikes from that era. Dam amal carb started leaking as I was going on 80/94 south of chicago and caught on fire.  I got to the shoulder as fast as I could and got off but the bike was complete TOAST.I sold the whole thing to a dealer for parts. :(

Had a Mikuni on my 67 TR6.--ran fine.
Was looking for originality so I tried 3 or 4 different
old monoblocks--looked good but ran like crap.
Finally got a new concentric.
Running great now.
