Hello All,

My wife has a business trip to Boston in mid-December, so I'll be tagging along and adventuring around the city while she's at work.  Yeah, it's a tough gig.  Anyhow, I've never been to Boston before, so I'm asking those who live there or have been there with any suggestions for things to do.  Of course anything that has motorcycles or cars would be great, but also any decent museums, good places to eat, jazz clubs, nightlife.  Any places to avoid?

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Prost!

Boston has lots to offer.

There are a few other members from the Boston area who will have some advice as well.

Have Fun!

Boston has the best resturants anywere. The North End for Italian, Legal Seafood for...uh, seafood.

Take the tours, Boston is rich in history and you will be amazed at some of the historical sites still standing.

USS Constitution, oldest commisioned Navy Vessal. Great tour.

This can go on all day, My wife is from Boston, so I got the grand tour.

You really can't go wrong, you'll have a great time, Boston is a wonderfull city.

I am in Boston (though not originally from Boston  ;)).

Yes there is plenty to do and see here although mid-December may not be the best weather-wise - who knows!
Anyway check out :
1. the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA)  - good Japanese exhibit at the moment - on Huntington Avenue.
2. Institute for Contemporary Arts down by the waterfront - Ive not been but have heard its very good.
3. John F Kennedy museum - again on the waterfront - need to take the subway/T here but its a great location by the sea. If you were feeling energetic you could walk 3-4 miles along the waterfront to Castle Island for great views of Boston harbour/waterfront
4. North End - the "Italian" section - old brick houses, narrow streets....many Italian restraunts of varying quality -also sight of Paul Reveres House and North End Church - worth a visit.
5. Beacon Hill - oldest part of Boston behind the State house -John Kerry lives here....worth a visit especially at night/dusk when lanterns come on...Charles Street at bottom of hill has some good cafes, resteraunts or try Sevens bar...small but friendly. Also this area is next to Boston Common and Public Gardens - both worth checking out.
6. From the Public Gardens walk up Newbury street - fashionable women are all over here....
7. For downtown bars - lot of Irish bars (this being Boston) and mostly all the same so if you like that kind of thing then you cant go wrong - good pub (not Irish) opposit City Hall on Tremont - old style with long winding bar  -dont call the name though.
8. Faneuil Hall - tourist heaven/shops....also very moving Holecaust memorial worth visiting.
9. The Freedom Trail - walking route for tourists to take in the key moments of the beginnings of the Revolutionary War.
10. Harvard University, Cambridge - short ride on the redline to Harvard and you can see the world famous University and think..."is that it?".....
11. Fenway Park baseball stadium
12. Sam Adams Brewery Tour - who wouldnt want to go on this!!

If you have a night free and want to meet a few of us SOHC guys for a beer Im sure we could manage something  ;D

Let me know if I can help further.
cheers
Andy

I'll copy Andy as well on meeting if you want . Additionally, there is a museum of transportation which may be worth taking a look at.
It's a good organization which sponsors a lot of meets including the Jap vintage bike meet in September.

While I don't know where you're staying or whether the weather will be cooperative, one of my favorite places to go is at the end of Broadway in South Boston. There ypu'll find Castle Island, one of the fortified Islands that was used in the revolutionary war to guard Boston Harbor. It offers great views of the harbor as one walks around and out into the harbor on a circular walk that is about 1.5 miles long.
http://www.bostonharborwalk.com/placestogo/location.php?nid=6&sid=44

Copley Square and Newbury Street are a great park of the downtown area with lots of little places to stop that retains the Brahmin tradition. You can walk down to the Boston Gardens which is wonderful in itself as on of F.L. Ohlmstead's major achievements.

If your interested in seeing Boston from high vantage points,
The John Hancock observatory is kind of neat:
http://www.hancock-observatory.com/

although my personal preference has been to go up to the Top of the Hub for an afterhours drink and some jazz. Great views from there too!

Hope this adds something cool to your itinerary,
Ben

Sweet!!! Thanks for all the suggestions so far.  I'm from Milwaukee, WI and haven't traveled nearly enough so far in life.  Went to NYC over Thanksgiving in '06 and I really got bit by the travel bug hard.  I'd love to get together with you all-I'll be in town from 12/15-12/18; so I won't be around too long, but its worth it to get to meet and talk shop.  I forgot about the Sam Adams tour...Hmm could be fun.  I believe we'll be staying in downtown Boston although I don't know where just yet.  When the time draws near to leave I'll either email or restart the thread again to generate interest.   :)

I will be down in the Coney Island NYCT Yards teaching a class. I was supposed to be in Boston teaching the same class that week. I had plans to visit Mike and hopefully some of the other fellows. I have nothing against Brooklyn it's just I have to roll out of the house by 5 am  to get there for 7am. It's not the distance it's the bridge and traffic on the VanWyck. In Boston I roll out of the hotel by 6:45 and I am in the shop by 7 am. I will had over to Brighton Beach and hit the Russian stores for some goodies.

Sounds like a lot of the good spots have been covered...especially if you're in town for just 3 days. Maybe we should do our monthly B's...bikes, beers, burgers and babes somewhere in downtown Boston? What do you think Andy?...Ben?

Hey Mike, We had one at the beginning of this month just west of Boston, but I'd do it again, let's see if there is a consensus.
Best,
Ben

I had a good time a few years back making a picnic from the Russian markets and then eating up on the boardwalk. What's kind of interesting was when I rode through Lake George last August, I found that was the summer destination for a lot of folks from Brighton Beach and Coney, lots of Russian and eastern european kids hanging out. I'm originally from that region and am genetically programmed to love the food!

My inlaws are from that region, so I guess I am one by injection. I export food from here to Florida for them to enjoy on the holidays.

I could handle meeting in the city as I'm there for work anyway. I had to bag out of the early November meeting as I just beat (went to bed at 8:30)

Yeah Ben...Sat. night. If I see Jane I'll say hi for ya and let her know that we've started a club...;D ;D ;D...complete with t-shirts.

As for Andy...yeah, he's a pup still. All those miles will never make up for the fact that he wasn't around for the sixties and can barely remember the seventies...wait a sec...I was there and I can barely remember the seventies...oh well, I'm sure I had a great time.  ;D ;D ;D
