One of my favorite chops called "Black Bart" and built by the late Tony Carlini out of Dearborn, MI back in the mid-70's using a AMEN rigid frame:

That's not bad, but I'd ditch the big front wheel. Looks like a harley that got a good engine.

It's been posted before, another waste of a good Honda. There should be a law against such stupidity. Looks like a harley thing to me.

i think the way these bikes were customised in the seventies is just as much an important part of their history as is the standard bike.  should we erase part of history because it doesn't fit in with our current tastes?  i think seventies choppers look cool.  someone put ape-hangers on my bike in the seventies and i've kept them on because I find them very comfortable and they give me loads of leverage for throwing the bike into a corner.  it's great to see concours fctory bikes but it is also great to see what people did to them to suit their own needs or tastes.

I guess that's what excessive drugs or alcohol can do to a creative mind. I hope they were under some kind of mind altering force that made them do that to those bikes.
no i think its a lack of..... meaning look at all the good musicians out there especially back then and even now, its the drugs and lots of boos.. makes you step into the spirit world 8) 8)

It must be me then, cause now that I've been straight and sober for more than a week I'm not impressed. But it seems some on here aren't sober or straight yet,and it's been 30+ years for some, and I'm not just talking about this topic. I guess there right, drugs and booze will destroy brain cells. :( :( :(

The purple chop is owned by a friend of mine. It was an E-bay find.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little....

anyway here is my straight from the 70's 550 chop:

guy I bought this from built it in 1974 out of a brand new bike and an AEE catalog (it is not one of thier kits though). The only thing he wouldn't part with was the ridge top amen tank. I rode this bike for 2 years before putting her in storage...she is a death trap.

754 - I think what he is looking for is outlandish bikes from way back when. While most MODERN chop builders seem to be into to clean undersated bikes, the 1970's was a different case and there are so many bikes that were just over the top.

I will tell you what I do miss about the 1980's chopper scene (too young for the 1970s)....I miss mural paint jobs of album cover artwork. Twice I have seen Rush album covers transferred into tank airbrush work...even have a buddy with a mountain album on the tank of his 750. Unfortunatly, because I am such a lame ass if I were to do something like that I would pick Sabbath's "We Sold Our Soul for Rock and Roll" album to copy instead of something cool and arty like the starman logo off the back of Rush's 2112, Boston's first album, Cream's Disraeli Gears, or even Iron Maden's tailgunner artwork

That's one pretty chop Geety, all it needs is a 750 engine, and I'd want it bad! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Agreed, I was there in the 1970's and at the time, those bikes were cool! There are probably more "OEM factory original" CB750's now than there ever were back then, no-one kept their bikes completely stock, I'd hate to think how many sets of HM300 and 341 pipes went straight into the dumpster, or original seats, handle bars etc. I built my K1 almost entirely from Ebay parts, so I had no hesitation adding "period" parts that were so popular back in the day. Cheers, "Cheesy" Terry. ;D

No we don't need to erase the 70's history, but it seems more people with jap or european bikes are into the sportbike mode than the chopper mode. The chopper scene is more the hardley(yes I spelled it hardley because harley's are hardley bikes any more to me), v-twin type bikes. Yes I had a somewhat chopper bike in the 60's but it was hard to ride and a hard ride, so I gave those up when I stopped drinking and smoking. You really think ape hangers are comfortable???? To each their own!
So that's why those road racers have so much trouble in the corners, they have those low clip-on bars.

Like you say mate, "to each his own". I personally am sick of seeing "Carpy-fried Cafe's", (I've never found those horrible ace bars particularly comfortable, and the best thing the US could do is deport Carpy back to England) so a few "period" chops are a pleasant change, IMHO. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I agree "Carpy=fried cafe's" do very little for me. England can have him back. He's way over rated IMHO.

I guess you never saw Carpys Tracy bike, witch is pure 70's.

The Honda chopper guys love him. Other than Cycle-X, he is the only guy manufacturing NEW parts for these bikes.
Most of which cater to the chopper guys.  It's come to a point were you guys just hate somebody because it’s easy to.
I see people bringing up his name in topics that don't involve him, just to bash and say negative things. It's getting silly.

This bike has more creativity than 95% percent of the bikes on this forum.  Why is it is horrible, because it didn't fall out of the same cookie cutter as every one else's?  When you really look at all the custom work going into some of these honda choppers they are quite impressive!  Live a little, it might be fun.

Because it's MY opinion that he's over rated. Yes the cost. If it has his name involved with it some where, people think it's worth more. Some of his bikes are good, but alot of what he is doing for big bucks now was done by kids 35 years ago in England, it's not like he's doing rocket science. Yes the parts are expensive but just because his name is on it or involved doesn't mean it's worth more yet.

Choppers, not my thing anymore. I don't think handlebars or backrest or exhaust pipes over my head are goodlooking, useful or enhance the operation of the bike in any way. Like the title says "Cheesier the better" and they are very cheesey, but not better IMO.

tinyrobot - I have lived a little, been there - done that already. Just not impressed with that stuff any more. It's my opinion, you don't have to agree or do as I do/think.

Andoo - That's great that the Chopper Guy love him - but the last time I looked this is not a honda choppers forum, but sohc forum where MOST of the bikes are either restored to stock or a cafe type, not choppers. I don't hate the guy I just don't care for his style - like he came up with something new. NOT It's like buying a harley - old tech for modern prices. Not my style.

That's what I love most about this forum! Even though it's mostly populated with stock and cafe bikes us chopper guys can have a conversation about choppers in a chopper thread without being ridiculed and made to feel like retards because our tastes run contrary to the rest of the herd. ;D
There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are very few old, bold bikers.

Not doing what you can to make your bike ride-able during the best riding months of the year kind of defeats the purpose of owning it in the first place.

Well while it's true that this post was about choppers, Carpy builds pretty cheesy "custom" bikes, and considering that he uses so many left over 1970's chopper parts on his "Cafe racers" (16 inch rear wheels with Harley rims, lowering blocks on the rear shocks, drag pipes, etc etc, I think he qualifies to be included in this thread. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Labor, paint, polishing and parts arent cheap.  For what you get it seems like a fair shake, paying someone to build a bike for you - same with the choppers.

You seem pretty wound up about it though ;D
