Center Stand Hitting chain?
« on: July 27, 2005, 07:07:09 AM »
I tightened up my chain last night, and noticed while i was under there, that the center stand, when its up, hits the chain even when the chain is tightened up. I dont mean kinda rubs it a little, i mean when the center stand is up, it actually pushes the chain up. I just bought this bike, and have not ridden it yet (gotta work on the brakes next). There is no way you could ride it like that.  My question is this:

Is there a way to adjust the center stand? Or is there possibly some pads that im missing that go under there to stop the center stand from going up to far? Right now, the center stand only stops when it hits the chain.  Thanks again for any advise. If this helps....My bike is a 1978 CB750.

I have a 1977 K with F pipes on it.  What I did was to use some flat stock with a hole drilled in it and mount it to the bolt on the rear foot peg.  Use a grinder and round off the other end to match the profile of the center stand.  Just make the flat long enough for the chain to clear the stand, paint it black and scoot.

On the '78 750F there is a black metal bracket that mounts behind the rear foot peg (exhaust side, opposite chain). The stock exhaust mounts to this bracket. There should be a square rubber cushion, about 3/4" thick, at the bottom of this bracket. If it's missing you can try getting another or fashion something that will mount in the hole to stop your center stand. I don't know about the K model but imagine the center stop would be located in the same area.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Ah!

Yes i saw that bracket you are speaking of. Since the original owner changed out the pipes and made it i a 4 into 2, somehow the pad must have been torn off. Thanks again guys! I sure am glad i found this site.

On the 78 K the pad was on the exhaust itself.

When I changed over to a 4-2 I had to have a bracket made.

Where was this "bracket" installed?

On the bottom of the new left exhaust pipe there was a small square metal pad.  We drilled it out a bit and made an S shaped bracket about 2 1/2-3" in length.

I bolted the old rubber pad to one end of the bracket and bolted the other flat end of the S to the drilled out square. Works like a charm :)
