Dog Toy Test Thread
« on: December 28, 2007, 06:11:04 PM »
I'm thinking of starting a thread on Dog Toys, as a number of us on here have dogs and I'm sure some of you hate it hen you buy a toy, give it to the him/her, and its destroyed in 30 seconds.  My new guy, Punk (see pics below), loves to destroy every toy he can, and I'm having a hard time keeping him supplied and happy as well.  Seems all he gets are ropes and Kong toys.  Basically, say what toy you bought and review it based on dog's interest, durability, and cost, and maybe throw a pic up.  Sound like a plan?

When I adopted him in May:

Air Kong Football
« Reply #1 on: December 28, 2007, 06:26:33 PM »
So I'll go first then:

Punk was given the lovely Air Kong Football on Christmas Eve.  With him, if it doesn't get destroyed within the first hour, it will usually last a long while.  He was ecstatic as always when he gets a new toy, and he hasn't played with any of his old toys since.  Its basically a giant yellow tennis ball football.  It also has a very loud squeak.  This is actually the only toy he will play fetch with and seems to be a really decent buy.

Price:  $6.99~$8.99

Durabilty:  9/10  The tennis ball covering has shown some fatigue/shedding.  The ball itself is still solid.

Fun Factor:

For the dog, 10/10, nice loud squeaker that they CANNOT get out. He was actually annoyed at first, nudging it with his nose and barking at it.  Eventually he got over it.
For the Owner:  7/10, nice loud, annoying squeaker, the toy gets put away at night.  Also, your arm will get tired from throwing it so much.

Overall:  9/10, we'll see how it fairs longterm.

My pup doesn't seem t be in the same age bracket, so our experience isn't going to be much help.  "Hope" still has her puppy teeth, so most of her toys are still in one piece.  Except for any tags.  She seems to not like tags on her toys. She turns 6 months old Jan.7.   She did go crazy Christmas morning.  This is her in her new bed with her new toys.

Very nice pup you have there.  Yeah, Punk is probably a year and a half to 2 years old.  Seems to just like to chew one his toys until theres nothing left...

the reason i got "sputnik" here was that mom lost her last of 4 ferrets a couple of years ago. he was eaten by the dog  :-\

chew toy?  sputnik likes his keys!  dogs, evidently, like ferrets.

While Sammy loves tennis balls, Frisbees, Kongs and just about anything else he can chase down and treat as prey the best toy and the cheapest...they're free after all and an endless supply...is sticks. That boy loves his sticks...

Yeah, Punk will drag those around for a little bit until he gets bored.  His absolute favorite thing though are cardboard boxes.  Found this out one day after getting something from eBay.  Put the box outside the door to take to the garbage can in the morning.  Leave the dog out, go to leave him in and find shreds of cardboard everywhere.....goofy mutt...

Rosie is slowing down, and her attention span is getting shorter.  She used to love mr Hedgehog- a stuffed animal we got at the pet store.  We'd play tug of war, she's have pretend fights and shake it hard, and when she headed for the front door, she'd bring Mr Hedgehog with her and set him carefully down next to the door before she went out.  Sort of like a blankey, I guess.
Now, we mostly have wrestling matches with Mystery Monster.  MM is my hand under a quilt.  MM goes side to side, rears up and tugs an ear, goes underneath and lifts Rosie up in the heat of battle, stuff like that.
Nothing like a good ol rawhide bone for hours of contented munching.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

If Oro, our yellow Lab, decides to play (read: chew) at something consistently for any length of time it does not last.  Period.  The only toys that have lasted through his intermittent chewing are large animal thigh bones (which eventually get broken into smaller pieces that he keeps chewing for months), and a rubber chain that I cannot find at the moment to check the name.  I think it was 'Invincible'.  He loves to play tug with us, and that is the only thing that has survived it.  We've tried all the other 'durable' brands out there, and they don't survive this pup!  Our other dogs and kittens are a bit more merciful on the toys...

shelby the dachsund i got my wife for her b-day back in july is around 3 we think, she LOVES the mini frisbees or tops off of the tubs of margarine, she'll chase and play with those till she passes out. the cats (all 6) love their catnip, also called cat dope. and they shred the carpet off their kitty condos every 6 months or so.

I have the most appropriate dog toy for our forum dogs.  It seems pretty tough, it has a squeaker that seems hard to kill, and the best part is...

It's a sprocket!!!

With kojack, my wolf,  I've found rawhide bones to work well.  never really watched how long they last but for him they seem to be the thing he plays with, or chews the most.   tennis balls work well too for games of fetch that usually result in a game of "come and get me" with him.  havent really tried any other toys with the wolf, since he just likes to snuggle up with me.
