Topic: kick start spindle pin

1973 cb750K engine: can't get the goddamn kickstart spindle pin out to remove the spindle and clutch from the bottom case. ideas anyone?

Is it a roll pin (split pin) ?.. can you tack something onto it and use a slide hammer.. maybe??

i'd rather not, as i don't know how i'll replace it if damaged. if i have to, i'll just leave it and tape it to paint, but i'd rather clean everything properly and sure don't want to put the case in the beadblaster without removing it first. i've tried soaking it with several solvent/lubricants, and heating the cases for a short bit in the oven. mike rieck just suggested using wire cutters to grab it which i'll try next.. this part reminds me of some ford hubs, which have a lock pin some dumb engineer designed to be removed with a magnet... guessing some engineer felt brilliant while never having to attempt to remove it personally.

Mrieck  is spot on my manuel shows a pair of cutters being used to remove the kick starter spindle stopper pin.

Are they cutters or pliers?? if its a roll pin , pliers will make it a bit looser allowing it to come out easier..

 anyone got a pic?

Just use a pair of old side cutting wire cutters Paul, use the jaws to grab the pin and distort it, while you use the body of the pliers to "lever" against the pin boss. Much better than vice grips, etc. It'll come out easy, and I'm glad you're doing the full strip! Cheers, Terry.

that's weird-- i have an official honda service manual, and it shows the pin being removed with a set of needlenose pliers. guess it was a different print or something.

Ha ha, yeah Paul, I had a motto like that once, until I started working on these bloody bikes!

i guess i'd better pick one to half-ass... right now i have my K3 750 engine rebuild, the 718 build (slow but steady), the rest of the bike it's going in to re-overhaul, a '71 cl350 with a holed piston to rebuild, a '71 triumph 650 to start assembling, a '69 BSA A65 lightning to continue locating parts for and put together, a '70 cb750 to eventually restore...and that's just for me.

for other people: joe's 550/650 to finish, a '73 cb750 complete rebuild, two '71 cl350 overhauls, and a 550/650 build for a friend's first bike. can't half-ass for other people, and can't bring myself to for my own. oh well, perfectionism isn't the worst curse a person could have.
