Unfortunately they are rotted on the bottom. All 4. Going to have to change them out but can't justify dropping a grand. Probably going the Carpy route.

Too bad, the stock pipes look great on the bike.

I think you will be happier with the pipes from MotoGPworks directly as they are stainless and have the spring loaded header design allowing you to dismount them without disturbing the gaskets as every oil change they have to be dropped for clearance to remove the pipe...  Gets to be a pain with the Carpy pipe unless you do a remote filter kit.

Motad makes a replacement set of 4-1 and there are a few other makes.
The Carpy/MotoGP pipe isn't proven to be better on dyno, but it sounds nice and looks good. While the stainless pipe is more $ it is worth it. Ask those that have them...
Plus you will get better support from Chris at MotoGP than Carpy I think.
There is a company in the Netherlands that makes a nice set of pipes and they have a great tone. I think they make them for the 550 too. Ron in Indiana, MCRider, picked up a set for his 750 and they have a nice deep throaty tone that isn't too loud.
Loud pipes wear on you when traveling I think, the noise just increases your fatigue, studies support that viewpoint...

I picked up a set of 4-2 for my 550 that were made in Japan. Not sure who made them, they are chromed and nicely made. Probably old stock from years ago. Picked them up from another member a few years ago.  I expect them to be a little louder than the stock pipes.

That is a great deal of info! Thanks. I really like the way Carpy pipes sound. I actually wouldn't mind something louder, I think its a little safer. Other drivers in Chicago try to kill me daily.

Chris at Motogpwerks designed pipe that Carpy had built overseas, so, it was made cheaply and not out of stainless. The louder pipes merely annoy and aren't heard until you are beside or in front of them...doesnt really help you, other than get tickets where noise ordinances are enforced.
The MotoGPWerks pipe is worth the extra money.
Chris worked for Yoshimuri so, it is a soundly engineered pipe.

A good Nautillus air horn might be a better investment along with a good armored set of riding gear and the MSF courses, than a loud set of pipes.
You are never going to get rid of drivers who treat you as invisible.
A white helmet & Helmet Halo, or high vis yellow helmet & Helmet Halo will really improve your visibility.  The Hemet Halo is made of 3M reflective that looks like a glowing ring on your helmet at night. Made of 3M's most reflective material. I have had cops Uturn and follow me to get a better look at it. Looks like a dull silver band during the day...

Must .... Have .... Halo ....

Do tell!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Got good and padded/armored gear, a white helmet, and have taken MSF courses. I would recommend those to anyone! Halo looks neat.

I only own one 1974 CB550.  I purchased it in 1997 to learn how to ride.  2000 sold to a friend to do the same.  fast forward to 2010.  I was with out a motorcycle for 4 years already.  the friend I sold the 74 to asked me if I wanted the bike back.  I jumped at the chance.  turned out he never changed the title or even rode it.  the bike was right where I had left it in 2000.the first picture was 2010 when it came home, the second was this month on my sons birthday, the first time it moved under its own power since 2000.  still sitting however having major carb issues.

There may have been an additional or so 550's this year too

saving up for new headers and a seat
then there was this camo 550

sidecar is this winter's project
and then there was this semi chopped 550, still needs a kq seat

And the latest soon to be finished project 550 frame/500 engine

I've slowed down a bit this year so there aren't as many completed as last year.

I would have done mine that way also had it had more of the stock parts, but since almost everything on the bike was either a CB400 or CB350 there was not much left of the 550 so felt it was better (from a budget and wife stand point) not to try and go stock with it even tho I would have LOVED to do it.

Just took deliver of a 78' CB550 that belonged to my brother but he no longer uses.

When delivered.  Had been in a barn for about 11 years

Parked with her new garage-mates.  My 04 YZF600R and my buddies custom 77' CB550.

Quick clean

Tearing down and trying to undo years of sitting.
