You know I wish I could do that. I really do. In this area we have no inactive rail. It now bike paths. I rode some roadbed on a dirt bike, but now it is paved and citfied. No fun.

The other machine has wheels and axles from an ancient RR service vehicle.
Power is by 5 hp 4-stroke--will really haul !

Railbike has 48 volt internal front hub motor.
50 lb battery pack is prominent on left of pic.--will do 8-10 mph for 10-12 miles.

One of my friends here just designed some movable stands for our shop. He bought some steel flanged wheels for the stands from mcmasters-carr http://www.mcmaster.com/.
This allows them to be mounted and run on the floor rails. Steel wheels have very little rolling resistance. Two people can easily roll a 16,000 Lb wheel truck.

Ger, I spend my day around railroad stuff. I have been thinking about your railbike. I spend a lot of time with our production engineers, and one of the guys and I teach classes. He was redoing our truck building shop. The new stands had just come out of paint and I looked at the wheels and asked where he got them. I saw a the possibilities. If I had a place to do use it, I would build one. Kind of a modified go kart frame. With flanged wheels you can go pretty fast.
